Morning! Welcome to the Daily Briefing. Here's what's breaking:

Verizon is back online.
An Arctic blast threatens to unleash bitter cold.
John Harbaugh is finalizing a contract with the New York Giants.

Nicole Fallert here, enjoying these rapid-fire reading recs in USA TODAY's latest Books newsletter. We have Thursday's news, from ongoing anti-ICE protests in Minnesota to the latest on Trump's Greenland pursuit. And the "ton" get a wistful glimpse at "Bridgerton" Season 4.

Tear gas, snowballs, arrests

A federal agent shot a person in the leg in Minneapolis on Wednesday after being assaulted during an arrest, the Department of Homeland Security said, sparking further protests in a city on edge after the deadly shooting of Renee Nicole Good by an ICE agent earlier this month.

Meanwhile, Good's family  revealed new details about the hours leading up to the fatal shooting. According to the family and their attorneys, Good and her wife stopped "to observe, with the intention of supporting and helping their neighbors."

Another top takeaway: There are more ICE detention centers than ever. And immigration agents have fired upon at least 10 people since August, a USA TODAY analysis has found . In each case, agents shot at drivers or into moving cars – a practice that has largely been discouraged by law enforcement because of risks to public safety.

More news to know now

Greenland dispute persists: Denmark's top diplomat met Wednesday with Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio but said the allied nations are not in sync about the future of Greenland, which he said President Donald Trump "has this wish of conquering."
FBI searches Washington Post reporter's home: The Washington Post reported Hannah Natanson, who covers the federal government, was not accused of wrongdoing and that the outlet received a subpoena related to the investigation into a government contractor with a top secret security clearance.
Data centers on the ballot: Voter anger is surging as energy-guzzling data centers increasingly strain power grids and ratepayers' wallets. Opposition to the massive warehouses powering the artificial intelligence revolution is shaping up to be a major factor in the 2026 midterm elections.

Carol Meyers, 72, and her daughter, Carley Yelyashov, 44, insist they don't look alike, they don't sound alike and don't share a lot in common. Except one thing: They received identical diagnoses just over a year apart of multiple myeloma, a blood cancer that occurs when plasma cells become abnormal and produce dangerous proteins that can cause damage to our bones, kidneys and other functions.
