The Daily Briefing

Good morning! It’s Tuesday, Oct. 13, and today you should know: The new White House press secretary debuts. Pope Leo heads to the hospital to undergo surgery. A man convicted in the murder of Tupac Shakur will be sentenced. And this acetaminophen was recalled nationwide.

I’m Mallorie Sullivan, and if you are also an eldest daughter, this story will leave you feeling extremely seen. Let's get to the news.

🎯 Can you sue over targeted ads?

A Supreme Court case could help determine the answer. Today, justices will hear arguments over whether websites can share your video-viewing data with companies like Meta for targeted advertising. The decision could reshape a business model that powers much of the free internet. At the center of the debate? A privacy law from the 1980s.

• From climate to AR-15s: Here's what's on the Supreme Court's plate this term.
• Also: A judge is 'furious' after 430 trees were cut down at a DC golf course.

📰 More news to know now

• Trump says he had "nothing to do" with the DHS search on Rep. Omar's home.
• A new poll offers an early look at who could lead the 2028 presidential race.
• A sixth person has died in Pennsylvania's ongoing measles outbreak.

⛽️ Why the diesel deal may not work

By now, you've probably heard about Trump's controversial deal with Russia to import diesel to the U.S. in hopes of bringing down prices that have skyrocketed during the Iran war. While he predicted the move would send fuel costs falling quickly, oil experts say it may not be that simple. Here's why they think the plan may not deliver the economic relief Trump is promising.

• Soaring diesel prices could hit your wallet in unexpected ways. Here's how.
• Several states have imposed dyed-diesel waivers. See if yours is on the list.

💭 A few things I can't stop thinking about

• The social media beef between Kelly Clarkson and a local business.
• Texas losing to Oklahoma and tumbling in the college football rankings.
• And turophobia, or the fear of cheese, which I cannot believe is possible.

☝️ One more thing

• Nearly 90 years after Amelia Earhart vanished, an expedition team arrived on a remote Pacific island Monday to search for her long-lost plane.
