Pete Nakos' weekly college football insider notebook is back with the intel that matters entering Week 3. There's an eyebrow-raising injury report out of Baton Rouge, Miss State's Kamario Taylor about to face his toughest test yet, and behind-the-scenes details shaping several different ranked matchups this weekend.
Sam Leavitt injury update
LSU's initial injury report for Saturday's trip to Ole Miss came with a jolt Wednesday: starting quarterback Sam Leavitt was listed as doubtful. Multiple sources told On3 the Arizona State transfer is nursing a sore throwing shoulder and didn't throw at all in Wednesday's practice.
Skepticism remains high, especially on the Ole Miss side, that he'll actually sit out. The "widespread expectation" remains that Leavitt will start on Saturday. That sentiment only solidified after his status was upgraded in Thursday’s injury report.
Kamario Taylor faces SEC test
Through two games, no quarterback in the country has been more explosive than Mississippi State's Kamario Taylor, who Nick Saban recently called the "best kept secret in college football." He's piled up 581 passing yards, 145 rushing yards, and eight total touchdowns, and an NFL college scouting director told On3 he was the most physically gifted passer at this summer's Manning Passing Academy. Now he gets his first real SEC test, on the road at South Carolina. As one Mississippi State staffer put it, "KaMario is going to have some plays where he's just going to go alien mode and take off."
There's plenty more shaking loose this week. Nakos has the latest QB intel from Texas Tech, Vandy, and Clemson, more on how Ole Miss pulled off a stunning deal to keep Trinidad Chambliss and Kewan Lacy in Oxford, how Oklahoma State's defense found a way to slow down Oregon's Dante Moore, and much more.
