In yesterday's most high-profile primary, Maine Democrat Graham Platner − for whom embarrassing revelations about his personal life threaten to upend his bid to unseat Republican Sen. Susan Collins − has won the Democratic Senate primary.

Other takeaways: In South Carolina, Sen. Lindsey Graham survived a field of five primary challengers. South Carolina Rep. Nancy Mace's bid for governor failed after she lost President Donald Trump's favor. There were statewide contests to watch in the swing state of Nevada, and Trump and the state GOP are at odds over an open Congressional seat in North Dakota.

Pet owners are asking how to protect their dogs and cats from the New World screwworm after a dog in New Mexico became the first non-livestock animal to be infected in the current U.S. outbreak this week. Veterinarians told USA TODAY to prevent infection, check your pets for potential wounds where the screwworm might make a home. Monitor wounds regularly for unusual swelling or discharge or a foul odor, as that might be a sign of fly larvae in wounds. And watch for behavioral changes, as pets may experience pain, licking or chewing at a wound, loss of appetite and lethargy.
