Dear Friend,

Today, the Church celebrates the feast day of St. Thomas More (1478–1535), patron saint of lawyers, politicians, and civil servants, among others. Renowned as a brilliant Renaissance humanist and the author of Utopia, Sir Thomas More is best remembered for his unwavering faith and ultimate sacrifice.

When King Henry VIII attempted to separate from the Catholic Church and declare himself supreme head of the Church of England, More refused to compromise his beliefs. His steadfast commitment to the truth and the authority of Christ’s Church led to his imprisonment in the Tower of London and his eventual martyrdom by beheading, proving himself to truly be a “man for all seasons.”

To help us continue our vital mission of standing up for the faith today, we invite you to make a gift to support our ministry. In gratitude for your support, we will send you these beautiful new gold foil St. Thomas More prayer cards.

For a gift of $75 or more, we will also send you Word on Fire’s recently published book The Last Riddle: Advice on Living and Dying Well from the Imprisoned St. Thomas More by Stephen Smith. This deeply moving work captures the profound spiritual wisdom, letters, and reflections More penned while locked in the Tower of London. It offers timeless, practical guidance on how to preserve moral integrity and stand fast in the faith under pressure.

Significantly, More was a layman. Vatican II writes of the sanctification of the world through the laity, and this is precisely what we see in this “man for all seasons.” More saw a congruence between his work in the world—as a lawyer, a statesman, and a writer—and his Christian faith. He is a beautiful example of how the laity can bring the gospel into law, politics, literature, and countless other settings. And that makes him a great model for us today.

More reminds us that our primary allegiance belongs to God alone. He stood as a heroic bulwark against totalitarian impulses, demonstrating that a well-formed conscience cannot be sacrificed for political expediency, comfort, or social approval. Bishop Barron emphasizes that More’s martyrdom is a timeless lesson in moral courage. When the stakes were at their highest, he refused to substitute the law of the realm for the eternal law of God.

Today, as we face our own modern challenges to religious liberty and truth, St. Thomas More’s example inspires us to stand firm, confident that true freedom is found only in absolute fidelity to Christ. Will you join us in carrying forward this ministry? Please make a gift today to help us champion the timeless values of conscience, faith, and justice that St. Thomas More died to protect.

St. Thomas More, pray for us!

God bless you,

The Word on Fire Team
