👋🏼 Hi there! I'm Phaedra Trethan, looking forward to some spring weather, more daylight and the World Baseball Classic. 🌷 ⚾️ ☀️

In Wednesday's news:

Texas state Rep. James Talarico has defeated incumbent Rep. Jasmine Crockett in a closely watched Democratic primary. We have results and analysis from Tuesday's primaries in Texas, Arkansas and North Carolina.
The US sank an Iranian warship as the death tolls climbs in the US-Israel war against Iran.
Changing federal regulations could increase the speed at which slaughterhouses can kill chickens, turkeys and pigs. What that might mean for our food.

But first: I've been watching actor Christina Applegate since we were both teenagers. I'm rooting for her now. 💪🏼 🫶🏼

Texas: Talarico for Dems and a GOP runoff ✅

Voters in Texas, Arkansas and North Carolina were the first to weigh in on who will run in November's midterms . Texas' Democratic U.S. Senate primary pitted state Rep. James Talarico, a rising star in the party running on a populist-moderate message against U.S. Rep. Jasmine Crockett, a progressive firebrand. While votes are still being counted, it appears Talarico won the Democratic contest. On the Republican side, incumbent Sen. John Cornyn and state AG Ken Paxton will face off in a runoff in May, as neither received more than 50% of the primary vote.

Who is James Talarico? What to know about the Democratic candidate.
Crockett concedes: What she had to say about her primary opponent.
The Republicans weren't the only ones whose Texas race ended in a runoff.

Faster food, but will it still be safe?

The Trump administration's Department of Agriculture is proposing changes to limits on how fast slaughterhouses can kill chickens, turkeys and pigs — a move it says will lower costs and increase efficiency but critics say will compromise the safety of workers and the food itself. The USDA announced last month the proposed changes would remove "outdated" regulations, with higher caps on how many animals can be killed per minute or hour. One former USDA official cautioned that the changes would mean sacrifices in safety and that any cost savings would be pocketed by food production companies, not passed on to consumers. What's behind the proposed changes.

Young people: Less boozing, more barbells

A new report says Gen Z and millennials are drinking less alcohol and working out more in what one economist called " The Great Moderation." Many are citing the desire for a more healthy lifestyle, drinking less at home while still trying to socialize at bars with mocktails and other non-alcoholic drinks, and spending more time (and money) on physical fitness and wellness.
