The Short List

Thu Mar 5 2026

Phaedra Trethan National Correspondent

👋🏼 Hello, Thursday! I'm Phaedra Trethan, ready for a "false spring," but not so much for a polar vortex. 🌸 🥶

In Thursday's news:

President Donald Trump ousted embattled DHS Secretary Kristi Noem after she faced bipartisan criticism over her handling of the agency's tactics and spending.
Americans are feeling anxious as fuel prices jump. ⛽️ 💸
Even President Donald Trump's supporters question whether the war against Iran is in America's best interests.

But first: A suitcase full of rat poison. A couple hundred thousand T-shirts. So many Labubus and Lafufus. What travelers are losing and leaving behind. 🧳

Noem out at DHS

DHS Secretary Kristi Noem is out. This week, she faced grilling by lawmakers from both parties this week and criticism over her handling of Homeland Security tactics and spending. President Donald Trump announced late Thursday that she would be replaced by Sen. Markwayne Mullin, an Oklahoma Republican, effective March 31. What's next for Noem and the agency she'll no longer lead.

Americans bracing as gas prices jump

Gas prices typically tick up as summer approaches, but since the Feb. 28 start of the US-Israel war against Iran, they've gone up by an additional 20-30 cents a gallon, experts say. According to AAA, the national average gas price was $3.19 on March 4 — up from $2.97 a week before that. Higher gas prices mean Americans, already coping with rising housing, energy and grocery costs, will spend more to get to work, run errands and take vacations. It'll also likely mean higher prices for groceries and other goods. USA TODAY reporters across the country teamed up to talk to people about what they're finding.

A federal judge ordered the Trump administration to begin paying refunds to importers who paid tariffs the Supreme Court said last month were collected illegally. 💰
Tech companies say they'll pay more for their energy-guzzling data centers. Will that mean lower electricity bills for you? ⚡️ 💡

Americans on Iran: 'Their fight to fight'

President Donald Trump's war with Iran is polling badly, as it has jacked up gas prices and injected volatility into a stock market that the administration often cites as a bright spot in an uneven economy. "I don't think it's worth it," Amanda Cline, a Navy veteran and three-time Trump voter from California, told USA TODAY. "It's not our cause. It's their fight to fight. It's their regime and their problem to fix." What other Americans, including some of Trump's staunchest and most visible supporters, are saying.

Hello, sunshine! ☀️

Daylight saving time is coming! Yay! It means one less hour of sleep. Boo!

Most of us (looking at you, Hawaii and parts of Arizona) will spring forward early Sunday morning, but just because our phones and other devices make a seamless transition doesn't mean our bodies do. Our circadian rhythm (the internal clock) has a hard time adjusting, and that can lead to higher risks for heart attacks, cancer, depression, and even obesity. What to know, and how to make the adjustment a little easier.
