The first pillar of Lent: prayer

Renewing our friendship with God through prayer

Dear Friend,

On Ash Wednesday, Bishop Barron reminded us of the three pillars of Lent: prayer, fasting, and almsgiving to help draw our hearts more deeply to the Lord. Throughout this week, we'll reflect on each of these pillars, offering practical guidance to help you live this holy season with greater intention. Today, we begin with the first pillar: prayer.

In his Ash Wednesday message, Bishop Barron emphasized that Lent is a privileged time to renew our friendship with God. He urged us to set aside some quiet time each day—five minutes, ten minutes, whatever we can manage—to simply be with the Lord. Speak to him honestly. Listen in the silence. Meditate on Sacred Scripture. If you need structure, Bishop Barron recommended using daily Lenten reflections, like those offered by Word on Fire or another trusted Catholic apostolate. The key, he reminded us, is intentionality: carving out space every day to let the Lord speak to your heart.

As you deepen your prayer life this Lent, we also invite you to consider making Word on Fire part of your Lenten almsgiving. Your generosity allows us to proclaim Christ to the culture through compelling content, evangelization, and resources that help millions grow closer to the Lord. Make a gift this Lent as a concrete way to unite prayer with sacrificial love for others.

MAKE A GIFT

In addition to daily silent prayer, many Catholics find Lent to be a fruitful time to return to traditional devotions. Praying the Rosary, even just one decade a day, can anchor your prayer life in the mysteries of Christ. You might also consider praying with Scripture using lectio divina to guide your meditation.

Finally, we encourage you to pray the Stations of the Cross, a powerful way to walk with Jesus in his passion and enter more deeply into the mystery of his love. As a thank-you for your generosity, if you make a donation of any amount during Lent, you will receive a copy of our new Stations of the Cross brochure, designed to help you pray this devotion with depth and reverence throughout the season.

Let us walk this Lenten journey together: prayerfully, intentionally, and with hearts open to grace.

God bless you,

The Word on Fire Team
