Clare Mulroy Books Reporter

Happy Thursday, booklovers!

Roses are red, violets are blue. Boy, have I got some book recommendations for you!

Too cheesy? With Valentine's Day just around the corner, we're taking our sweethearts on dates and curling up with good romance books, or maybe even just showering our platonic pals with love. On Friday, we'll have two new stories to celebrate – one that spills on the big changes in Emerald Fennell's "Wuthering Heights" adaptation and another where we take you along with us to a romantic singles meet-cute event at a bookstore. You can keep an eye out for both of those on our Books homepage.

However you feel about the holiday, consider this a virtual Valentine to share my appreciation with you as a reader. You've shown up week after week to read about what's happening in the world of books, supporting USA TODAY's journalism and the hard work of authors and publishers.

Here are six book recommendations to celebrate with, three for hopeless romantics and three for our anti-Valentine's Day crowd:

For Valentine's Day lovers:

📋"The Re-Do List" by Denise Williams: This swoony small-town romance follows Willow, a young woman nursing heartache after breaking up with her high school sweetheart, and Deacon, her brother's best friend who is determined to help her re-do all those "firsts."

⛸️"Skate It Til You Make It" by Rufaro Faith Mazarura: Anyone currently obsessed with the Olympics or "Heated Rivalry" will find lots to love in this new fake-dating rom-com about a professional women's hockey player and a sports photographer.

🌲"Get Over It, April Evans" by Ashley Herring Blake: Dream of warmer days in this new queer romance, which follows two women finding an unlikely connection at a summer gig on a lake resort.

For Valentine's Day skeptics:

💌"The End of Romance" by Lily Meyer: Dubbed an "anti-romance romance," this big-hearted novel is about a cynical woman who is keen to rid the world of romance until she meets two men that change her life.

🗡️"The Exes" by Leodora Darlington: This thriller could be a, ahem, cathartic read for the jaded. One woman's seemingly perfect life is haunted by a string of dead exes and a dark secret.

🫂"Kin" by Tayari Jones: This book makes you want to hold your loved ones close, stressing the power of friendship and sisterhood. If you're celebrating friends and found family this Valentine's Day, check out Jones' masterful new historical saga about two motherless girls coming of age.
