The Daily Briefing

YOUR MORNING NEWS ROUNDUP

Wed Jan 14 2026

Nicole Fallert
Reporter & Newsletter Writer

*Moisturizes dry winter skin .* Welcome to the Daily Briefing. Here's what to know:

Trump flipped off a heckler at a Ford plant in Detroit.
Actor Timothy Busfield is reportedly in police custody amid sex abuse claims.
A "concerned" Matt Damon protested ICE.

Nicole Fallert here. Listen to USA TODAY Sports' Olympics video podcast "Milan Magic" and then dive into Tuesday's news, from the aftermath of Renee Nicole Good's killing and how inflation looked last month. Also, a coaching shake-up for the Pittsburgh Steelers.

US official says Greenland action could come within 'weeks or months'

There could be meaningful U.S. action related to the Arctic island within "weeks or months," according to Thomas Dans, the Trump administration's Arctic commissioner. He's regarded as one of the main proponents of the president's interest in Greenland, an idea first brought to Trump by billionaire and former diplomat Ronald Lauder.

Dans has been working on the issue since 2020.

"This is a train route with multiple stops," he said in an exclusive interview with USA TODAY. "Things could move on an express basis, skip the local stops and go direct to the main station. That's where President Trump wants to move it — at high speed."

Still, Dans told USA TODAY that while he thinks there could be noticeable progress on negotiations or a deal on Greenland sooner rather than later, he ultimately expects the acquisition to take longer than that to complete.

More news to know now

Minnesota prosecutors step down amid pressure. At least four leaders in the criminal section of the Department of Justice's Civil Rights Division have resigned over the Trump administration's push to investigate the widow of Renee Nicole Good, who was fatally shot Jan. 7 by ICE agent Jonathan Ross.
Inflation stayed at 2.7% in December. The final Consumer Price Index report of 2025 caps off a year in which inflation gradually eased but remained uneven across the economy. Grocery prices are up even though inflation held steady last month. And here's Trump's latest answer on $2,000 tariff dividend checks.
"A kid who wants to play sports might not be able to." The Supreme Court's conservative majority seemed likely to uphold state bans on transgender girls playing on female teams. Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh told the lawyer representing the transgender student challenging West Virginia's ban: "It's kind of a zero-sum game for a lot of teams."

Something to talk about

Was Tomlin taken out?

Mike Tomlin pulled a stunner Tuesday,  stepping down as head coach of the Pittsburgh Steelers — and with two years left on his contract, per ESPN. Was he fired?! Team president Art Rooney II didn't publicly communicate any effort to talk Tomlin out of resigning after 19 years as the team's head coach. Look back at Tomlin's seasons — and where he's potentially headed. USA TODAY Sports gathered eight options for the Steelers' top spot.
