The Short List

Tue Nov 11 2025

Phaedra Trethan National Correspondent

@wordsbyphaedra

👋🏼 Hello! I'm Phaedra Trethan, thinking about how much good it does me to get outside each day. 🌳 🍁 🍂

In Tuesday's news:

It's Veterans Day! A sincere thanks to all who've served and continue to do so. 🫡 🙌🏽
The government shutdown may finally be nearing an end. But not everyone is happy with the deal.
Weather woes + government shutdown = travel headaches. ✈️

But first: "Rodeo" and "skis" are two words we didn't imagine in the same sentence, but here we are . ⛷️ 🐎

Thank you for your service

Today is Veterans Day, when the nation expresses its gratitude to those who've served our country and helped preserve and protect our freedom.

We talked to vets and asked them to reflect on their service and sacrifice . "It taught me a lot about myself … how do I continue to help the community?" said retired Marine Corps Sgt. Matt Gordon. "How do I continue to stand up for those that either don't feel like they have a voice or don't have a voice?"

Shutdown fight, even as the end's in sight

A handful of moderate Senate Democrats have drawn the ire of others in their party , especially progressives, as they maneuver with their GOP colleagues to end the longest-ever government shutdown.

Words like "betrayal," "capitulation" and "malpractice" are being thrown at Democratic leaders, with calls for Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (who did not vote in support of reopening the government) to resign. Their anger stems from the deal's failure to extend expiring Affordable Care Act subsidies — the reason Democrats had held out in the first place.

Travel troubles

Suddenly, it's winter . ❄️ ❄️ ❄️ The government is still shut down. Air traffic controllers and TSA agents are stressed and overworked, and not getting paid. It's all adding up to a travel mess.

Car loans get longer

Cars, like seemingly everything else, are getting more expensive. Now more consumers are taking out longer loans to get lower payments and stretch their buying power. But is it worth it?
