Customers are feeling anything but charm and comfort after one restaurant's rebrand. President Donald Trump joined law enforcement in Washington, DC. And Hurricane Erin is turning away from the United States – but still bringing harsh waves to the East Coast. |
👋 Hi! Rebecca Morin here. No spoilers, please! I need to catch up on the latest episode of "The Summer I Turned Pretty" after I bring you Thursday's news. |
Where's the old-fashioned comfort? | No more man sitting on a chair, no more wooden barrel, and a new minimalist look. Cracker Barrel debuted a new, simplified logo with the launch of a fall menu campaign on Tuesday – and some customers are not happy about it. The restaurant chain and country store, known for its comfort food and nostalgic atmosphere, is undergoing a rebrand that includes renovations at some locations to give the establishments a more modern look. |
What customers are saying: Some longtime fans of the restaurant expressed disappointment with the company's logo, calling it "cold and sterile." 👉 See the new logo design. | The Cracker Barrel store in Mt. Andy Humbles / USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn Images | Trump joined law enforcement in Washington on Thursday night, a move that comes after deploying the National Guard in the nation's capital. Trump spoke with law enforcement officials at the U.S. Park Police facility in Anacostia, a neighborhood of Washington. Ten days ago, Trump ordered 800 National Guard troops to the streets of Washington and took action to seize control of the city's police force after declaring a local crime emergency. Washington's violent crime rate was down 26% in 2025 compared with a year earlier. 👉 More on Trump's DC takeover. |
Trump's legal win: An appeals court has thrown out the $454 million penalty imposed on Trump in his New York civil fraud case. In a Thursday ruling, Manhattan-based appeals court determined the penalty was improper. Trump and some of his entities were hit with the hefty penalty, plus interest, in February 2024 after a judge concluded he had inflated the value of his assets for years to secure better loan and insurance terms. 👉 New York Attorney General plans to appeal decision. | The Washington Monument is visible as National Guard troops walk along the National Mall on August 20, 2025 in Washington, DC. One storm down, another forming | Hurricane Erin, the large Category 2 storm, reached its closest approach to the U.S. East Coast and was beginning to move away from North Carolina – still unleashing powerful waves and rip currents that threatened beachfront homes and flooded roads as authorities urged people to stay out of the water. Major flooding was forecast at more than a half-dozen tidally influenced locations along the mid-Atlantic coast, including Duck, North Carolina, around the entrance to the Chesapeake Bay, and Lewes, Delaware, as the storm surge from Erin flowed into communities. 👉 See the projected path of Hurricane Erin. |
Brace for another storm: Forecasters are also watching a developing tropical wave in the Atlantic that could become Tropical Storm Fernand in the coming days. It is one of three developing systems the National Hurricane Center was tracking in the Atlantic. The storm has a high chance of development and will likely become the next named storm, but is expected to turn quickly out to sea. 👉 How a new storm could impact islands in the Caribbean. | Heavy swells, which were already causing some erosion issues, and the danger of rip currents kept all but experienced surfers out of the water at Wrightsville Beach on Aug. 20, as Hurricane Erin approached the North Carolina coast. This cartoon takes on Trump | "South Park" goes to Washington. The Comedy Central series' new episode, which aired Wednesday, continued its season-long thread of mocking Trump and depicting him in a romantic relationship with Satan. The latest episode, titled "Sickofancy," continues the show's satire of the Trump administration, a major focus of its 27th season. The White House previously responded to the Season 27 premiere, with spokesperson Taylor Rogers saying the show "hasn't been relevant for over 20 years and is hanging on by a thread with uninspired ideas in a desperate attempt for attention." 👉 What happened in the latest episode. | Towelie goes to Washington in the latest episode of "South Park."
