As billionaire Jeff Bezos' wedding day nears, backlash grows. New York's surprising primary results could mean a shift in the Democratic Party. And one of the world's biggest pop stars gave a surprise performance. |

When a billionaire gets married | It's not just the cost of the wedding. Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sánchez are also paying the price of public rage for their lavish multimillion-dollar nuptials. Bezos and Sánchez, who are tying the knot in Venice, Italy, this week, have drawn the ire of social media users online as well as protesters in the streets. The two were spotted for the first time during their wedding week on Wednesday arriving by taxi-boat to Venice. The wedding is estimated to cost $23 million to $34 million, said regional governor Luca Zaia. As the couple's wedding week continues, the backlash online has only grown. Mental health experts said the strong reactions to luxury weddings, like Bezos and Sánchez's, point to deeper frustrations people have with their own economic situations. 👉 Why the billionaire's wedding struck a nerve. | Amazon's founder Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sanchez wave from the taxi-boat as they arrive at the Aman Hotel in Venice, Italy, on Wednesday. What NYC's mayoral vote means for Democrats | New York City Democrats decided. Zohran Mamdani, a 33-year-old state legislator, topped a crowded 11-person field in the primary for New York City mayor, even beating the state's former governor, Andrew Cuomo. The race could be a bellwether for the future of the Democratic Party: a contest between an older, moderate establishment and a youthful, progressive vision. Mamdani, a member of the Democratic Socialists of America, represented the left of the spectrum, with Cuomo, a centrist who appointed many Republicans to his administration, on its right. Mamdani will begin the general election as the favorite in the overwhelmingly Democratic city and would be the city's first Muslim and first Asian American mayor if he wins in November. 👉 How Mamdani pulled off a stunning upset. |
A new direction for Democrats? Some progressive politicians and activists see Mamdani's win as a sign voters are shifting away from the establishment and embracing progressive candidates who could reenergize the base. Mamdani ran largely on the cost of living and took economic populist positions that raked in a wide-ranging voter coalition. 👉 How Democrats and the GOP are responding. | Zohran Mamdani reacts as he walks during a watch party for his primary election.
