If you saw something that felt off today, check your calendar. A Democrat is making a run at the longest Senate floor speech ever. And Luigi Mangione could potentially face the death penalty.

👋 Hello! Rebecca Morin here. Spring is playing a joke on the DC area today. But you don't have to worry about that for Tuesday's news!

But first: An unlikely retreat. 🐘 For 30 years, former circus elephants have gone to retire at this sanctuary just outside of Nashville.

Sorry, no news today

Just kidding! It's the worst day of the year: April Fools' Day. Maybe I'm just bitter because I'm a little gullible (and I don't need a single day to be funny). Either way, it's not just your friends pulling pranks on you. Brands and companies have been getting in on the tricks – from Yahoo's 'Touch Grass' keyboard to Reese's chocolate-infused bread. 🤡 Don't get fooled by these products.

A marathon speech on the Senate floor

No food, no bathroom breaks and no sitting. Since Monday at 7 p.m., Sen. Cory Booker, D-N.J., has been holding a marathon speech on the Senate floor in protest of President Donald Trump and Elon Musk. Booker said he will go "for as long as I'm physically able to go." The record for the longest Senate speech in history came in 1957, when Strom Thurmond held the floor for 24 hours and 18 minutes in opposition to the Civil Rights Act. While Booker's speech isn't technically considered a filibuster, as he is not attempting to stall or block legislation, the Senate floor will remain open so long as he is speaking. 👉 How long can he go?

More layoffs to the federal workforce

President Donald Trump's cuts to reduce the size of the federal government aren't stopping yet. Layoffs began Tuesday at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and at the Food and Drug Administration – the first steps in Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.'s plan to cut 10,000 jobs at the Department of Health and Human Services. Other federal departments also introduced new efforts to shrink their workforce. The Transportation Department sent thousands of employees a new buyout offer to leave government service in exchange for pay and benefits through Sept. 30.

What do the cuts affect? Internal agencies focused on older adults, people with disabilities, tackling HIV and improving minority health have been closed at the HHS. In total, the department's workforce is expected to drop from 82,000 to 62,000 people due to buyouts and layoffs. 👉 Follow today's updates.

DOJ calls for death penalty for Luigi Mangione

U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi has instructed the Department of Justice to pursue the death penalty against Luigi Mangione, the 26-year-old man accused of killing UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson. Bondi said the decision is in line with President Donald Trump's agenda to "stop violent crime." Mangione is facing both federal and state criminal charges in Thompson's Dec. 4 death. Bondi's announcement would affect only Mangione's federal case, where he's accused of stalking and of murdering the health care executive through the use of a firearm. 👉 What to know about Mangione's case.
