Oscar nominations are out. President Donald Trump's executive order on birthright citizenship is blocked. And why the latest blaze in California is growing so fast. |
👋 TGI…TH? Rebecca Morin here. Don't look now, but I got Thursday's news for you! | Who is going to win the coveted golden statue? The Academy Awards nominees are out, and "Emilia Pérez" is the front-runner this season with 13 nods, including for best picture. Both "The Brutalist" and "Wicked" followed with 10 nominations each. But there were some notable snubs. Here's to hoping I put my AMC A-List subscription to good use. |
Best Picture: Alongside "Emilia Pérez," "The Brutalist," and "Wicked," nominations for the biggest award also include "Anora," "A Complete Unknown," "Conclave," "I'm Still Here," "The Substance," "Dune: Part Two" and "Nickel Boys." 🎥 See the full list of nominations. |
Who didn't make the list: You win some, you lose some. Despite months of glad-handing at parties and robust campaigning, several key actors and movies were passed up. Both Pamela Anderson ("The Last Showgirl") and Margaret Qualley ("The Substance") were absent from the best actress and best supporting actress lists. "Sing Sing," which gained traction in recent months, didn't make the cut for best picture. 🎬Check out more snubs. |
When will we know the winners? The Oscars ceremony is scheduled for March 2 at 7 p.m. EST/4 p.m. PST, on ABC and Hulu. | "Emilia Pérez" actors Adriana Paz, left, Edgar Ramirez, Selena Gomez, director Jacques Audiard, Karla Sofía Gascón and Zoe Saldaña celebrate at the Golden Globes on Jan. 5. Judge blocks Trump's birthright citizenship order |
President Donald Trump's move to curtail the right to automatic birthright citizenship was blocked Thursday by a federal judge. |
Trump's order: To crack down on immigration, Trump on Monday signed a series of executive orders, including one that will end automatic citizenship for children whose parents are foreign nationals, whether they're here legally or not. The executive order was met with legal action from several Democratic-led states and by the ACLU. |
'Blatantly unconstitutional': U.S. District Judge John Coughenour issued a temporary restraining order that prevents the Trump administration from enforcing the order. "This is a blatantly unconstitutional order," the judge said. 👉 More on the ruling. |
Hughes Fire latest blaze to burn near LA |
Thousands have had to flee their homes after the Hughes Fire, which erupted in northern Los Angeles County on Wednesday, has moved quickly through the region as firefighters try to contain the blaze. |
Evacuations: As of Wednesday, about 31,000 people were under mandatory evacuation orders. Another 23,000 were under evacuation warnings. The fire was 14% contained as of Thursday morning. 👉 Follow today's coverage. |
Why are the fires spreading fast? In just a matter of hours, the Hughes Fire went from zero to nearly 10,000 acres. The rapid growth can be attributed to these key factors: extreme drought, lack of rain and fierce winds. 👉 How the fire grew. | A California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation prisoner, who is a part of the firefighting crew, works as the Hughes Fire burns in Castaic Lake, Calif. on Wednesday.
