Hurricane Milton intensifies on way towards Florida |
Hurricane Milton strengthened to a Category 5 powerhouse Monday as it rolled across the Gulf of Mexico bound for what could be a devastating crash along Florida's storm-battered western coast Wednesday. The storm has rapidly intensified, strengthening from Category 2 to 5 in just a few hours. Although some weakening is forecast before the hurricane reaches the coast, Milton "is still likely to be a large and powerful hurricane at landfall in Florida," according to the National Hurricane Center. Monday marked one year since Hamas militants attacked southern Israel, killing 1,200 people and taking 250 others hostage, prompting an Israeli military response that has left more than 41,000 Palestinians dead and nearly 2 million displaced in Gaza. The Israel-Hamas war has been "a paradigm-shifting time in understanding the Middle East," said Mara Karlin, a foreign policy expert and former adviser to six defense secretaries. SCOTUS goes against Biden in Texas abortion case |
The Supreme Court on Monday rejected the Biden administration's attempt to require emergency abortions in Texas when needed to prevent serious injury to the mother. The high court let stand a lower court's ruling that abortions that violate Texas's strict abortion ban aren't required under federal law. The Supreme Court's rejection of the appeal comes after it allowed emergency abortions in Idaho while the administration's challenge to the state's abortion restrictions is litigated. Unlike in Idaho, where the Biden administration challenged the state's ban, Texas sued the administration for telling hospitals they had to offer abortions if necessary to prevent serious injury to a woman's health. 🏛 Read more on the court's decision. |
