Beryl wreaks havoc in Texas after making landfall as a hurricane. President Joe Biden shrugs off calls to end his presidential campaign. And don't bother bringing your checkbook to Target stores after this week. |
👋 It's Julius here, tagging in for my pal Laura this week! Let's get into Monday's news, shall we? |
Beryl made landfall along the Texas coast as a Category 1 hurricane early Monday, unleashing a barrage of severe weather as it moved inland before weakening into a tropical storm still capable of widespread damage. |
What's happened in Texas? Through the morning, much of eastern part of the state was inundated with "life-threatening storm surge," torrential rain and wind gusts of up to 84 mph in the Houston area, the National Hurricane Center said. The dangerous conditions prompted rescue operations, disrupted hundreds of flights, left more than 2 million people without power and caused at least two deaths. 👉 See the latest updates. | Debris and flood waters from Hurricane Beryl cover the main roadway in Surfside Beach, Texas, July 8, 2024. Biden digs in ahead of pivotal week |
President Joe Biden continued to reject calls for him to step aside in the presidential race against Donald Trump ahead of an important week in the nation's capital. |
What he's saying: The president insisted in a letter to congressional Democrats that he's not dropping out despite concerns about his mental fitness and capacity. He then called into MSNBC's "Morning Joe" to push back on the growing calls to step aside. And on a Zoom call with his biggest donors, Biden declared that the party's primary voters have spoken. The president's latest rebukes come ahead of a high-stakes NATO summit this week in Washington. 👉 Follow updates on President Biden. |

RIP to personal checks at Target stores |
If you're under the age of 30, don't worry about finding out what a checkbook is – at least for your Target runs. Starting July 15, the retailer won't be accepting personal checks, citing their "extremely low volume" of use. While Target won't take checks in stores anymore, customers can still send personal checks by mail to make Target Circle Card payments. 🛒 What to know about the move. | | | | Disney World and Disneyland recently changed their policies for guests with disabilities.
