Witness testimony began in Hunter Biden's gun trial. Air conditioner companies are about to get a major increase in phone calls. And former Trump associates are facing new charges in a fake elector scheme.

👋Hey, Tuesday! Laura Davis here. Have a look at what's been going on in the news today!

But first: A sunken treasure chest! A New York couple was magnet fishing in a muddy pond when they snagged a safe stuffed with cash.

Testimony begins in Hunter Biden gun trial

The first witness started her testimony in Hunter Biden's felony gun trial, kicking off the presentation of evidence in the historic case featuring the first criminal charges against a president's child.

The charges: Hunter Biden faces three felonies over whether he lied on a federal gun form in 2018 that asked if he was addicted to drugs.

In the courtroom: In opening arguments presented on Tuesday, Justice Department special counsel David Weiss' team began by laying out the case against Hunter Biden and saying "no one is above the law." Defense lawyers followed later in the morning, alleging that Biden didn't knowingly lie when he filled out a form in 2018 denying he used illegal drugs as he purchased a gun.

About the laptop: Special Agent Erika Jensen testified about messages and other data from Hunter Biden's now-infamous laptop, which has sparked years of controversy. 👉 More from the courtroom.

Welcome to the heat dome

The heat dome is here. The country's first major heat wave of the summer will spread over the West in the next few days, forecasters said, pushing temperatures to dangerous and even "life-threatening" levels across several states, including California, Nevada and Arizona. By later this week, temperatures in Phoenix and Las Vegas could reach 111 degrees.

What to do? If it's going to be hot in your area, try to stay in air-conditioned areas, drink plenty of fluids and please, check on neighbors and relatives and make sure they are doing OK. ☀️ A look at who will see extreme temps.

Trump aides charged in fake elector scheme

Wisconsin's attorney general has filed felony forgery charges against an aide and two attorneys who worked for former President Donald Trump in 2020 for their part in a plan to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election by submitting false slates of electors. The charges are the first to be filed by state prosecutors against anyone involved in the scheme.

Charges were filed against: Kenneth Chesebro, a Wisconsin native and lead architect of the fake elector plan; former Dane County Judge Jim Troupis, who represented Trump in Wisconsin during the 2020 election; and Mike Roman, a former Trump aide. 👉 Here's what we know.

So, about that 'suspended license' ...

Vindication. A Michigan man who went viral after a judge noticed him driving with a "suspended license" while he attended a virtual Zoom court hearing was apparently the victim of a clerical error.

How did we get here? Corey Harris, 44, attended a virtual hearing for charges related to an October traffic stop. A clip from the hearing spread like wildfire across the internet, with many in disbelief that he would drive with a suspended license right in front of the judge. The judge revoked Harris' bond and ordered him to turn himself in to jail. But what nobody apparently knew was that Harris' license suspension had been lifted over two years ago. 👀👉 Here's what happened.
