Israel pounds Gaza with airstrikes

Desperation swept across Gaza as Israeli rockets smashed into neighborhoods for a fifth day Wednesday, destroying homes and infrastructure in response to the brutal attack by Hamas. The American death toll rose to 22 and Israeli fatalities surpassed 1,200 Wednesday as Israeli soldiers retaking communities near the Gaza border encountered streets littered with the bodies of civilians, including women and children. Palestinian officials say more than 1,100 people in Gaza have been killed and more than 5,000 wounded. An estimated 250,000 people have fled their Gaza homes, with most taking shelter in packed U.N. schools. 👉 Follow our live coverage for the latest updates.

Republicans back Scalise behind closed doors

Getting closer ... House Republicans made a major step toward electing a new speaker on Wednesday, formally nominating House Majority Leader Steve Scalise of Louisiana. In an internal secret ballot vote, Scalise beat out his primary rival, Rep. Jim Jordan of Ohio, by a vote of 113-99, according to Rep. Darrell Issa. The conference vote, however, is just a sign of approval from House Republicans at large. The House still has to formally elect a new speaker on the chamber floor, and lawmakers are still free to nominate other candidates. 👉 What's happening now.

Junk fees? 🗑

Biden's over it. In the president's most sweeping action yet on "junk fees," the Biden administration is proposing a new rule to prohibit companies from hiding fees from consumers. Americans collectively pay "tens of billions of dollars" in junk fees each year, according to the Federal Trade Commission. The FTC's rule would require all industries under its jurisdiction to show the full price upfront to consumers, including for concert and sports tickets, hotel rooms, and apartment and car rentals. Violators would be subject to financial penalties and be required to compensate customers. 👉 Here's how it could affect you.

'Ring of Fire' eclipse coming soon 🌙

A solar spectacle will cross the sky this weekend when an annular eclipse known as the "ring of fire" appears across the western U.S. On Saturday, the eclipse will travel from the coast of Oregon to the Texas Gulf Coast, NASA said. It's called a "ring of fire" thanks to the shape of circular light created by the partial eclipse, where the moon slides in front of the sun but doesn't totally obscure it, creating a bright halo effect. That means you'll need to wear eclipse safety glasses the entire time to protect your eyes. 😎 Here's where and when you can catch the eclipse.

Saturday's eclipse will be pretty awesome. But will the one in April be even better?
