| Speaking of kids, I am thinking of so many of my Kent State students over the last six years who, with President Biden's debt forgiveness program, may now be able to pursue the careers they dreamed of when they were in my classes. |
| My students want to be journalists, writers, photographers and filmmakers. (That's a few of them in the photo, as we always take a class selfie on the last day.) About a third are the first in their families to go to college, and none of them come from wealth. They want to cover the world and help make sense of it for all of us. Their often-complicated lives have made them astute observers of everyone, not just celebrities and politicians. |

| Virtually all these students hold at least one job, and many cobble together two and sometimes three jobs to stay in school. Too many of them graduate with so much student debt they can't work in their chosen field, as those early jobs pay too little for them to meet their obligations. They take jobs to pay the bills, and this daily slog slowly but surely grinds their dreams into dust. |
| This is one boomer who is grateful that millions of Americans will get this financial reprieve, and perhaps feel the spark of a dream reignited. I was the first in my family to go to college, but affordable tuition, grants and low-interest student loans made it possible to graduate with barely any debt. Lucky me, I'm tempted to say, except that luck should have nothing to do with it. College should be affordable for everyone who wants to go. |
| Plenty are grumbling about how they had to pay off their debts and so should everyone else. Should no one have it easier than we did? I can't agree. As I tweeted yesterday, I lived with debt all my years as a single mother. My days were leaden with worry, my dreams hard to keep afloat. I am so happy for all of you whose shoulders feel suddenly lighter because of student debt forgiveness. Look up. |
