All about Rex Huppke

He doesn't like baseball, but it's OK. ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌  ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌  ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌  ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌

DO NOT USE USA TODAY Opinion columnist Rex Huppke
A reintroduction of our new Rex Huppke, our new columnist.
He doesn't like baseball, but it's OK.

Today's newsletter is all about Rex Huppke. He's our newest columnist, coming from the Chicago Tribune and he writes about most things with a sense of humor. His satirical headlines might catch you off guard at first, but once you understand his style you'll love his writing.

Rex started in February, and here's the few things that I (Jaden, the newsletter's writer) learned about him so far: He doesn't care for baseball. He lives in the Midwest (where I'm from) and he's very kind. I'm trying to be accepting of the fact that he doesn't like baseball.

So for your Sunday read, I'm sharing some of my favorite Rex columns. I hope you like them as much as I do. Also you can follow him on Twitter and Facebook. I know he'd love to hear from you.

East Coast Joro spider invasion means one thing: Move to the Midwest!

Headlines that include the words "spiders" and "invade" are not generally harbingers of good news. Such was the case Wednesday when this headline appeared on USA TODAY's website: "A spider as big as the palm of your hand could soon invade the East Coast, scientists say."

After courageously screaming and checking my legs, because it sure felt like spiders were crawling on them, I read the story. In retrospect, that was a terrible mistake.

My life will now be divided into two parts: the time before I knew there was a 3-inch-long, parachuting, yellow-striped spider invading the East Coast and the time after I knew there was a 3-inch-long, parachuting, yellow-striped spider invading the East Coast.

America's kids care about Russia's war on Ukraine. We should listen.

In a nation of loud voices – often terribly, terribly loud – it's easy to overlook the softer ones. The ones that would, perhaps, just like to be heard, please, if the noisy, noisy yelling people on TV wouldn't mind.

One of those voices made its way to USA TODAY this week, an email popping up like a reminder that while we shake our heads and pound our fists and holler and wail about Russia's unprovoked and unconscionable invasion of Ukraine, there are young people across America watching and reckoning with the news and the images of war.

The message was from Ava Felice, a 16-year-old from Vineland, New Jersey, who is a high school junior at Cumberland County Technical Education Center.

Passage of 'Don't Say Gay' bill demands 'Don't Say Florida' response

Folks, it's time we stop our children from learning about Florida in public schools.

On Tuesday, the Florida Senate passed the controversial "Don't Say Gay" bill, which restricts discussion of sexuality and gender identity in classrooms. The legislation now goes to the desk of Gov. Ron DeSantis, who is expected to sign it into law, highlighting once again that Florida is an inappropriate topic for young children.
