Happy Labor Day weekend, friends of the Short List!

Sure, it's not exactly the holiday we were hoping for, thanks to coronavirus. In-person gatherings and travel remain somewhat curtailed. (If you actually are flying somewhere, by the way, you should read this.) But there's still plenty to celebrate. Scoop up some great Labor Day shopping deals. Take in some natural beauty in your own state. Or just relax at home without having to WFH.

With some extra time on your hands, you could spend a little of it on some excellent journalism – the weekend's long reads:

Who will guide today's civil rights fight? USA TODAY Network selects Leaders of Change.
"It really changes your life": The pandemic has brought NYC ferries back into vogue.

And there are plenty more where those came from:

Off-campus yard and porch parties were packed Aug. 20 near Ohio State University. Few masks were visible. A mix of online and in-person classes began Aug. 25 at the Columbus campus.
'Shame': College students say COVID-19 cases aren't their fault
Videos of college partiers don't tell the whole story of COVID-19 outbreaks. Experts say students are asked to behave in a way that's unnatural.
