On Today's Show

A note to readers: Fareed's Global Briefing will be on hiatus for the next two weeks. Insights from Fareed and the GPS team will return to your inbox in September.

On GPS at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. ET today on CNN:

First, Fareed gives his take on America's talks with the Taliban—and the risks of withdrawing from Afghanistan too quickly.

An emerging deal "has the potential to bring greater stability to Afghanistan after an 18 year inconclusive war in that country," Fareed says. But some hear echoes of Vietnam, and if the US promises total withdrawal before it secures a lasting political settlement, chaos could follow. "First, Washington needs to make sure it doesn't just end the war but also wins the peace," Fareed says.

Next, Fareed sits down with a panel of CNN analyst and Financial Times columnist Rana Foroohar, Financial Times US national editor Edward Luce, and Richard Haass of the Council on Foreign Relations; they'll discuss the state of the global economy as it trends downward, Brexit machinations as votes may loom in the UK, how President Trump's "maximum pressure" campaigns are faring, and more.

Our What in the World segment will examine South Africa's debate over whether to redistribute land held by whites—and how land reform has been enacted well and poorly elsewhere. After that, former Irish president and The Elders chair Mary Robinson discusses climate justice, as rich countries contribute most to, and poor countries suffer most from, global warming.

Finally, Tara Westover, author of the best-selling memoir Educated, shares her remarkable story of being raised in a Mormon, survivalist family that didn't believe in education—and how she taught herself and eventually earned a Cambridge PhD.
