Virginia Beach shooting: 12 killed, 6 injured, gunman dead

The longtime Virginia Beach public works employee behind the nation's latest mass shooting put in his two-week notice on Friday morning, hours before he carried out an attack that killed 12 and wounded four , officials said Sunday. The suspect used a handgun armed with a silencer that police believe was used to keep victims from knowing where the attacker was in the building. The shooter was eventually killed in an "intense firefight" with four responding police officers. The suspect was "in good standing" in his job and gave no indication that he planned an assault on colleagues, City Manager Dave Hansen said. Eleven of the 12 victims killed worked for the city.

Trump denies calling Duchess Meghan 'nasty,' despite recording

President Trump is slamming reports that he called Duchess Meghan "nasty," despite an audio recording of the exchange. "I never called Meghan Markle 'nasty," Trump tweeted Sunday, referring to a Friday interview with Britain's The Sun. A journalist noted the former American actress "wasn't so nice" to Trump during the 2016 U.S. presidential election. "I didn't know that she was nasty," Trump said. The president plans to visit the U.K. this week and will meet Queen Elizabeth II, Prince Charles, Prince William and Duchess Kate after he and first lady Melania Trump arrive Monday in Britain.  But Trump is not expected to exchange pleasantries with Duchess Meghan, who is currently on maternity leave with one-month-old Archie

China slams US over trade war in report

China said it won't give in on "major issues of principle" in its trade war with the United States, according to a report issued Sunday that blames the U.S. for the escalating dispute . China, in the report from the Cabinet spokesman's office, accused the U.S. of backpedaling over agreements in trade talks and "resorting to intimidation and coercion." The report added that "any agreement reached by the two sides must be based on equality and mutual benefit." The Trump administration ratcheted up its trade battle with China in May when it hiked U.S. tariffs on $200 billion in imported Chinese goods from 10% to 25%. The president has also threatened to add a 25% tariff on virtually all the remaining $325 billion in products brought in from China.

Maryland couple found dead in Dominican Republic hotel room

A couple from Maryland was found dead in a hotel room while on vacation in the Dominican Republic. Edward Nathaniel Holmes, 63, and Cynthia Ann Day, 49, had been staying at the Bahía Príncipe hotel at the resort Playa Nueva Romana since May 25, hotel director Francisco Romero told local media . After they missed their checkout time on Thursday, hotel staff entered the room and found both bodies unresponsive but no signs of violence, the hotel said in a statement. Dominican Republic National Police said blood pressure medication was found in the room and that an autopsy revealed the cause of death to be respiratory failure, according to CNN.

'Jeopardy!' champ James Holzhauer poised to top Ken Jennings

Reigning "Jeopardy!" champion James Holzhauer has secured his 32nd win. Now he's just one dominant game from surpassing Ken Jennings' non-tournament record of $2,520,700. The professional sports gambler brought in $79,633 Friday night , bringing his total earnings to $2,462,216 – just $58,485 from breaking Jennings' record. Holzhauer had $52,633 going into Friday's Final Jeopardy! round. Jennings and Holzhauer are the only two "Jeopardy!" contestants to earn $2 million or more in regular, non-tournament winnings, a barrier Holzhauer crossed in last Friday's episode.

James Holzhauer holds the all-time single-game record for amount won on 'Jeopardy!' -- $131,127.

Cruise ship rams into tourist boat in Italy

Onlookers ran in panic as an out-of-control cruise ship collided with a much smaller tourist boat in Venice on Sunday morning. At least five people were injured in the crash, Italian news outlets reported. The accident occurred at around 8:30 a.m. on the busy Giudecca Canal as the ship rammed into the river boat. The cruise ship, called the MSC Opera, encountered a mechanical problem as it attempted to dock, ship owner MSC Cruises said. Davide Calderan, president of a Venice towboat association, told Italian news agency ANSA that "two towboats tried to stop the giant and then a tow cable broke, cut by the collision with the river boat." The accident sparked renewed calls to ban cruise ships in Venice, a source of frustration in the popular tourist city.

Remains believed to be missing Texas 4-year-old found

The remains of a child found Friday in Arkansas have not yet been confirmed to be Maleah Davis, the Texas 4-year-old reported missing more than three weeks ago. An autopsy will determine the identity and cause of death, police said. "Do we believe that it's possibly her? Yes. But can we confirm it right now? No," Executive Assistant Police Chief Troy Finner said Friday. Authorities discovered the remains after a tip from local activist Quanell X, who said he spoke with Derion Vence, the ex-fiance of Maleah's mother, Brittany Bowens, Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner said at a press conference.

Navy confirms request to hide USS John S. McCain during Trump visit

The U.S. Navy acknowledged Saturday that it received a request to shield a U.S. warship bearing the name of former political rival John McCain from Trump's view during the commander-in-chief's visit to Japan last week  – but did not comply. The statement did not mention who made the request. The Wall Street Journal was the first to report that White House officials wanted the destroyer to be kept "out of sight" during Trump's Japan visit, apparently fearful that the president would be upset at having to see the name of the late Arizona senator. Trump on Thursday said he had no knowledge of the request to keep the ship from view, saying, "I would never do a thing like that."

Biden slammed by Democrats for skipping California convention

Democratic presidential frontrunner Joe Biden skipped this weekend's California Democratic Primary , but he was hardly forgotten. The former vice president, who polls show with a solid lead in California, was the only top-tier White House hopeful to pass on the convention. That gave rivals an opportunity to throw jabs: Without naming him, Sen. Elizabeth Warren alluded in her speech to comments that Biden made last month in New Hampshire. "Some Democrats in Washington believe the only changes we can get are tweaks and nudges,'' Warren said. "If they dream at all, they dream small." Instead of California, Biden headed to Ohio  to speak at an event on the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall Riots.
