On Today's Show

On GPS at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. ET on CNN:

First, Fareed gives his Take on what President Trump gets right about China's economic policy – and why the administration is justified in pushing back.

"The Trump administration may not have chosen the wisest course forward – focusing on steel, slapping on tariffs, alienating key allies, working outside the WTO – but its frustration is understandable. Previous administrations exerted pressure privately, worked within the system, and tried to get allies on board, with limited results. Getting tough on China is a case where I am willing to give Trump's unconventional methods a try. Nothing else has worked," Fareed says.

Then, Fareed speaks with former Treasury Secretary Larry Summers about whether he believes China has been taking advantage of the global trading system, the Trump administration's response, and the President's attacks on Amazon.

Next, John Bolton is expected to become President Trump's national security adviser on Monday. What is behind the decision to replace H.R. McMaster? What makes a successful national security adviser? How should the United States respond to Russian interference? Joining Fareed to discuss all this is Tom Donilon, who served as national security adviser under President Obama.

Plus: President Trump's White House has been notable for the number of generals he has appointed to senior positions. Is that cause for concern? Joining Fareed to discuss the issue is retired Admiral Michael Mullen, who served as Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff under Presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama.

Watch Mullen discuss mixing politics and the military

Also: President Trump has made clear he would like to see the US military involvement in Syria end soon. Joining Fareed to discuss US policy toward Syria is Rania Abouzeid, who covered one of the first protests in Damascus in 2011 and is the author of "No Turning Back: Life, Loss and Hope in Wartime Syria."
