OnPolitics Today: Trump tells Florida shooting survivors 'we're going to get it done'
President Trump bows his head during an opening prayer

President Trump's meeting with survivors of last week's high school shooting in Florida wasn't supposed to result in policy ideas. But Trump seemed open to ideas - a lot of them.

"It's not going to be talk like it has been in the past," he said. "It's been going on too long. Too many instances, and were going to get it done."

Trump signaled possible approval for raising the age to buy assault rifles, tougher screenings for gun sales and concealed firearms for teachers.

"We're going to be very strong on background checks," Trump said. "... We're going to go strong on age of purchase and the mental aspect."

A student survivor tells Trump: 'There needs to be a change'

Wednesday's emotional, 70-minute session was attended by parents who lost children in the Columbine and Sandy Hook massacres in addition to survivors of last week's shooting in Parkland, Fla., like 15-year-old Justin Gruber

"I was born into a world where I never got to know safety and peace," said Gruber, who recalled hiding in a closet during the shooting as he texted his father. "There needs to be a change."

Trump listened. He nodded. He handed a tissue to a girl. Elsewhere in Washington, hundreds of students walked out of middle and high schools in a call for gun reform. Outside the White House, students laid on the ground to symbolize those lost to school shootings.

Meanwhile in Tallahassee: Survivors take lawmakers to task

Chants of "Never again" and "Shame on you" rang out Wednesday at Florida's state Capitol in Tallahassee. Student survivors from the shooting one week ago at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland rallied alongside hundreds of peers from other schools to demand change from lawmakers. The rally came a day after Florida House lawmakers overwhelmingly rejected a ban on many semiautomatic rifles, leaving students there speechless. At the White House on Wednesday, President Trump promised tougher background checks for gun buyers: "It's not going to be talk like it has been in the past." Students and others still plan to march on the nation's capital March 24.
