Eclipsed today: The Secret Service's salary woes and Trump's Afghanistan strategy
| | | | | with Jessica Estepa | | OnPolitics Today: Total eclipse of the heart | | | Once upon a time, we were falling in love, but now we're only falling apart...because eclipse mania is over. We hope you were wearing the proper eyewear when you looked up, unlike certain people (albeit briefly). The next total eclipse that will be viewable in North America is in 2024. If the president has his way, that would be the final year of his presidency. Perhaps it would be apt for the Trump years to begin and end with eclipses. | | But we're getting ahead of ourselves. Let's get to the headlines. | Every now and then, I fall apart | | In a USA TODAY exclusive from Kevin Johnson , we learned that the Trump presidency is costing the Secret Service. According to Secret Service Director Randolph "Tex" Alles, more than 1,000 agents have already hit mandated caps for salary and overtime allowances. Why? Because of the work it takes to protect President Trump, who has traveled nearly every weekend since he took office, and his family. Under Trump, the Secret Service is tasked with protecting 42 people, including 18 members of the Trump family. That's up from the 31 people who needed protection under Obama. | And I need you now tonight | | The president is set to outline his new Afghanistan strategy tonight during a primetime speech. What to expect: a clear path to deploy thousands more troops to the country. Why is this happening now? The president has "made a decision" about what to do in a situation that also frustrated his predecessors. What will it include? Like a demand for more assistance from NATO allies and Afghanistan itself. Learn more about why this all matters. | Elsewhere in politics | | | | | MOST SHARED USA TODAY STORIES | | | | | | | | | | | | | | FOLLOW US Thank you for subscribing to On Politics. © 2017 USA TODAY, a division of Gannett Satellite Information Network, LLC. 7950 Jones Branch Drive, McLean, VA 22102 Unsubscribe from On Politics Why did I get this?
