OnPolitics Today: GA-6 is a Trump referendum, but only if you believe hard enough

GA-6 is like a Political Tinkerbell -- the outcome only means something because we're clapping our hands and convincing ourselves it means something.

The future of the Republic is at stake tonight in Georgia. The future hasn't been this much at stake since last month in Montana. And odds are that the Republic will be at stake several more times in the next few months, which is going to be nerve-wracking. Happy summer, everyone!

Democrat Jon Ossoff faced off against Republican Karen

Clap for GA-6! Come on, clap!

Tuesday night, we should learning the results of suburban Atlanta's special election, which will send either Republican Karen Handel or Democrat Jon Ossoff to Congress.

What's up with the June election? It's to fill the seat vacated by former Rep. Tom Price, whom Trump selected as secretary of health and human services. And all of us -- politicians, political junkies and the media -- have agreed that Tuesday's election will decide if we're still going to #MakeAmericaGreatAgain, or if we're going to #DerailTheTrumpTrain. FiveThirtyEight's Nate Silver says GA-6 is like a Political Tinkerbell -- the outcome only means something because we're clapping our hands and convincing ourselves it means something. A win by Handel might convince Republicans that support for Trump's agenda is just as strong as in November, while a win by Ossoff might unnerve blue-district Republicans into taking more centrist positions on everything from health care to tax reform.

Polls close at 7 p.m. EDT, which means in a few hours only one side will be clapping, and the other side will argue that the vote was meaningless all along.

Senate Dems slow their roll

Speaking of health care reform, Senate Republicans are hammering out their version of the American Health Care Act, which would repeal and replace the Obama-era Affordable Care Act. What's in it? Your guess is as good as ours. Trump reportedly referred to the original version, the one that passed the House last month, as "mean," and everyone has expected a massive rewrite in the Senate since the moment it passed.

Senate Democrats aren't thrilled that the latest draft is being written behind closed doors, and they're doing everything they can to slow things down  and insist that the bill be debated in open forums. "Before passing a massive bill that will affect the lives of every single American, there ought to be a rigorous and robust debate in committees and a full debate on the floor," Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer of New York said in a statement. Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said there would be "ample opportunity" to read and amend it, if by "ample opportunity" you mean "less than 10 hours."

Democrats want Uncle Joe in 2020

Which potential 2020 candidates are viewed most favorably? Among Democrats, only two contenders broke 50%: former Vice President Joe Biden and Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren, according to a Morning Consult/Politico poll.

And the gap between Biden and Warren is significant. Biden has a 74% approval rating, Warren's is at 51%. A majority of survey respondents had no opinion whatsoever of everal other possible contenders, including New York Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand and California Sen. Kamala Harris. There's 1,100 days or so left before the 2020 Democratic National Convention, so they have some time to work with.

Who's the target market for this swimsuit, exactly?

Swimsuit season is here, but it's probably going to be canceled altogether thanks to Beloved Shirts. The Shocked Trump One-Piece Swimsuit features too unflattering of a photo for the #MAGA crowd, but the #NeverTrumpers probably wouldn't don The Donald at the beach. Seriously, who's buying these?
