Hello! Rebecca Morin here. Happy almost-Fourth of July! I don't know about you, but I'm ready to see the fireworks! |
Trump's signature bill passes Congress | President Donald Trump just got his big second-term win. His signature tax, policy and spending package passed the House in a final vote on Thursday to get the legislation to the president's desk by a self-imposed Independence Day deadline. The House narrowly passed with a 218-214 vote on Trump's $3.3 trillion domestic agenda, ending taxes on tips and overtime, cutting Medicaid, and bolstering border security. Trump is expected to sign the massive legislative package into law at the White House, possibly on the Fourth of July. Follow the latest updates. |
Democratic resistance: Ahead of the bill's passage, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, D-New York, held up the vote for the legislation for over 8 hours. Jeffries used his "magic minute," a privilege for House leaders that allows him to speak on the floor for an unlimited amount of time, to throw a wrench in the GOP's timeline. Jeffries shattered the House speech record as a result of the delay tactic. | Speaker of the House Mike Johnson (R-LA) hugs a fellow House member at the U.S. Capitol on July 3, 2025. Supreme Court takes up transgender athletes case | The Supreme Court on Thursday announced it will review Idaho's and West Virginia's bans on transgender athletes joining female sports teams in its next term – once again weighing into the culture war issue of transgender rights. States that have passed laws preventing transgender athletes from competing on female school sports teams say they are trying to prevent competitive advantages. But the laws don't take into account someone's athletic ability or how far they are in transitioning to another gender. The justices are likely to hear arguments in the fall and hand down a decision next year. How the court has weighed in on transgender rights. |
The countdown to America's 250th birthday | Trump has a birthday on his mind. Not his (which he celebrated last month alongside the Army's 250th birthday.) But, the United States' 250th year. To mark the milestone anniversary of the country's founding, the White House is planning a full year of events that will culminate on July 4, 2026, exactly 250 years after the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Trump is kicking off the yearlong countdown on Thursday with a speech at the Iowa State Fairgrounds in Des Moines that will include "patriotic entertainment" and fireworks.
