👋 Howdy! Rebecca Morin here. Happy Fourth of July-eve! Let me catch you up on the news before you head into the long weekend! |
Trump's signature bill heads to his desk | President Donald Trump just scored a major second-term win. The House on Thursday narrowly passed his signature tax, policy and spending package after days of debate. The $3.3 trillion legislative package includes ending taxes on tips and overtime, cutting Medicaid and bolstering border security. Trump is expected to sign the bill into law at 5 p.m. on the Fourth. 👉 See how lawmakers voted for the bill. |
What the bill means for you: Trump's sweeping tax package could make future generations "worse off," regardless of income, according to a report from the Penn Wharton Budget Model. The report finds that over the long term, all income brackets will see lifetime losses after initial gains. 👉 See how the tax changes will impact you. |
Democratic pushback: Ahead of the bill's passage, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, D-New York, delayed the vote for more than eight hours – shattering a House speech record. Jeffries used his "magic minute," a privilege for House leaders that allows unlimited floor time, to disrupt the GOP's timeline. 👉 What Jeffries said about the bill. | Speaker of the House Mike Johnson is congratulated by his fellow Republicans after signing the One Big Beautiful Bill Act during an enrollment ceremony in the Rayburn Room at the U.S. Capitol on Thursday. Actor Michael Madsen dies | Michael Madsen, a prolific actor who had a long-standing collaboration with filmmaker Quentin Tarantino, died Thursday at age 67. Madsen died after a cardiac arrest, manager Ron Smith confirmed to USA TODAY. Madsen racked up 300 acting credits over his career, often playing tough guys, and appeared in some of Tarantino's biggest films, including "Reservoir Dogs," "Kill Bill: Vol. 2" and "Once Upon a Time in Hollywood." 👉 More on Madsen's career. | Michael Madsen attends his Hand and Footprint Ceremony at TCL Chinese Theatre on November 16, 2020 in Hollywood. What happened to Amelia Earhart? | It's one of the greatest unsolved mysteries of the 20th century. Amelia Earhart disappeared while attempting to fly around the world. But a new expedition may be what one official called the "greatest opportunity ever" to finally solve the mystery. The Purdue Research Foundation and the Archaeological Legacy Institute announced a joint effort to locate Earhart's plane in a lagoon off a Pacific island between Australia and Hawaii, where a popular theory suggests Earhart and her navigator, Fred Noonan, may have landed on May 20, 1937. 👉 Researchers will journey to the island on Nov. 4. | Amelia Earhart stands under the nose of her Lockheed Electra in March 1937, the year she disappeared while trying to fly around the world. Happy (early) birthday, America! | Independence Day is almost upon us! You know what that means: hotdogs and fireworks. The weather is also shaping up to make sure you still have a great view of the fireworks. Almost two-thirds of the country, from the the Great Lakes region and Northeast to most of the West, will have clear and dry weather, AccuWeather forecasters said. The heat, however, is something to watch for; temperatures are forecast to reach the 90s across several states. ☀️ Check out your Independence Day forecast. |
