👋 Hello! Rebecca Morin here. Look what I got for ya. It's Tuesday's news!

But first: Too many hot dogs. 🌭 One woman who was disqualified at the Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest says she feels no embarrassment after she couldn't keep the food down.

Stories of survival

A mother and son clung to a tree to avoid being swept away. A 17-year-old girl hung onto a branch and prayed the tree wouldn't fall. And a family of 33 waited for rescue on the roof of an inn with dozens of others. Survivors of the flooding in central Texas are beginning to share their harrowing experiences of escaping the deadly waters. Rescue teams have scoured the area for signs of life and saved hundreds of people, pulling them into boats and helicopters. 👉 How some survivors saved themselves in the Texas flooding.

Search and rescue underway: Search and rescue operations in central Texas entered their fifth day on Tuesday after heavy rainfall overwhelmed the Guadalupe River. More than 100 people have been killed after floodwaters roared through homes and summer camps. The last "live rescue" was made on July 4, said Jonathan Lamb of the Kerrville Police Department. 👉 See the latest updates.

Remember the trade wars?

President Donald Trump wants countries to come to the table or pay up. Trump said on Tuesday that he's not extending his latest tariff deadline of Aug. 1 any further. It's part of a pressure campaign on longtime U.S. allies to negotiate new trade deals. Trump said he's sticking to the Aug. 1 start date for higher tariffs to take effect and is sending letters to leaders around the world, alerting them to new U.S. tariff rates on goods from their countries. 👉 See the tariff rates for countries.

You may have to keep your shoes on!

Take your laptop out of your bag and make sure your liquids are in a gallon-size bag – but keep your shoes on! The long-standing policy requiring most passengers to remove their shoes at TSA checkpoints is no longer in effect, said Kristi Noem, Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security, which oversees the Transportation Security Administration. Noem said the new policy goes into effect immediately nationwide. The shoe removal policy was initially put into place in 2006 in response to a December 2001 attempt by an airline passenger to conceal a bomb in his shoe. 👟 Why the policy changed.
