Starvation worries in Gaza

As aid agencies say many Gazans are hungry and malnourished, Israel rejects claims that it is intentionally starving Gaza's population. ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌  ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌

Happy Monday! Rebecca Morin here. Looks like Jay Leno weighed in on war against late-night hosts. Spoiler: He doesn't think late-night TV is really for politics.

Starvation stalks Gaza

Maybe families can get one meal a day. A single egg could cost $20, while a bag of flour can cost $1,400. World leaders and global officials – from the United Nations' World Health Organization to dozens of humanitarian agencies – are sounding the alarm that malnutrition and even starvation in Gaza is on a "dangerous trajectory." More than 2 million Gazans remain trapped almost two years after the war that began after Hamas attacked Israel on Oct. 7, 2023. The United Nations' World Food Programme says a third of Gaza's population does not eat for several days at a time and that one in four Gazans is "enduring famine-like conditions." One mother, Amal Nassar, living in the Gaza strip details the dire situation.

Israeli military action pauses: Israel will pause military action in a humanitarian area along the coast of Gaza for 10 hours at a time, from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. local time, each day, and increase aid drops following uproar over reports and images of starving Palestinians. More than 125 people have died due to malnutrition, including 85 children, the Hamas-run Gaza Health Ministry said over the weekend.

Israel says 'no policy' of starvation: Israel denies that it is intentionally starving Gaza's population, accusing the United Nations of failing to collect and distribute aid sitting on Gaza's border. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Monday said "there is no policy of starvation in Gaza, and there is no starvation in Gaza."

Trump rejects claims of no starvation: President Donald Trump said he disagrees with Netanyahu's claim that no starvation among the people of Gaza. "Based on television, I would say not particularly, because those children look very hungry," Trump said Monday when asked by a reporter. "But we're giving a lot of money and a lot of food, and other nations are now stepping up."

How Trump's immigration policies are affecting farmers

Candice Lyall, a cherry farmer from Washington state, had more than 100 workers to help pick cherries during the short harvest window. But by the second week, the workforce dwindled to 30, leading her farm to struggle to get cherries picked in time. That's just one example of the farmers who are facing worker shortages and fears of unpicked crops as Trump's immigration raids have roiled farms and farming communities. Of the 2.6 million people working on U.S. farms, about 42% lack legal status, according to the Department of Agriculture. Long-standing immigration struggles, such as a costly foreign agriculture worker visa program, is now compounded by the lurking presence of Trump's masked immigration forces. How farmers and some lawmakers are searching for a solution.

Trump again says he's 'allowed to' pardon Epstein associate

Is a pardon on the table for an associate of Jeffrey Epstein? The president said no one has approached him about that. As Trump continues to face backlash against his administration's handling of the Epstein case, the president continues to say he "allowed" to pardon Ghislaine Maxwell, a key associate of Jeffrey Epstein who's serving a 20-year sentence on sexual abuse charges. Trump, however, said nobody's asked him about it and that it would be inappropriate to talk about it. Maxwell met with Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche for two days last week to answer questions about Epstein. Critics have said the meetings with Blanche were part of a White House effort to quell the backlash.

Mike Johnson says Maxwell pardon would give him pause, but it's Trump's decision.
