Humanitarian agencies are warning of an increasingly dire situation in Gaza. Hurricane season is brewing, and more storms are expected in the coming weeks. And ew – watch out for those spiders! |
👋 Hello! Rebecca Morin here. The Short List had a case of the Mondays: A previous edition with last week's news erroneously went out earlier today. Apologies to your inbox! Let me catch you up on today's news. | A bag of flour: $1,400. A single egg: $20. Food for the day? Hopefully. World leaders and dozens of humanitarian agencies are sounding the alarm that malnutrition and even starvation is on a "dangerous trajectory" in Gaza. The United Nations' World Food Programme said that 1 in 4 Gazans is "enduring famine-like conditions." Israel is pausing military action in a humanitarian area along the coast of Gaza for 10 hours at a time and increasing aid drops after uproar over the reports and images of starving Palestinians. One mother living in Gaza, Amal Nassar, told USA TODAY there isn't enough to eat and basic needs, like diapers, are hard to get. 👉 How Nassar and other Gazans struggle to get food. |
Trump splits from Netanyahu: President Donald Trump said he disagrees with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's claim that there's no starvation among the people of Gaza. When asked by a reporter whether he agreed with Netanyahu, Trump said: "Based on television, I would say not particularly, because those children look very hungry." 👉 Trump also said he told Netanyahu Israel's approach would likely have to change. | Palestinians crowd around a food distribution point in Gaza City on July 27. Hurricane season's just getting started | It seems as if it's been pretty quiet out on the Atlantic. But hurricane forecasters are warning things could get busy come August. WPLG-TV hurricane expert Michael Lowry told USA TODAY that August is typically when hurricane season in the Atlantic Ocean ramps up and that we're "approaching a pivot point." Hurricanes typically aren't common in June and July. There have been three named tropical storms so far in 2025, which is actually above average for this time of year. And experts say conditions for a storm will soon become more favorable. 👉 What to expect for the rest of hurricane season. | The number of named storms per 100 years, by month. A natural wonder, or just plain creepy? | If I still lived in Texas, you probably wouldn't catch me hiking for the next few months. This is a warning to all those who despise creepy-crawlers and live in the Southwest and West. Before long, tens of thousands of tarantulas in states like California, Colorado, Kansas, New Mexico and Texas will begin crawling out of their burrows in search of females for mating season. While the idea of thousands of hairy spiders picking their way through parks and campgrounds might give many people the heebie-jeebies, in general these misunderstood, wandering arachnids are nothing to worry about. |
What do you do if you come across the spiders? Dan McCamish, a senior environmental scientist with California State Parks, said you should just leave them alone. 🕷️ Why you shouldn't kill tarantulas. | A male blonde tarantula crosses a road in southern Colorado while searching for a mate. What you missed at Comic-Con | Yes, Marvel skipped out on this year's Comic-Con. But no, that doesn't mean it was boring! San Diego Comic-Con, which ended Sunday, was still packed with panels and pop culture news. "South Park" guys Trey Parker and Matt Stone made some waves at the convention just one day after the show's Season 27 premiere where they lampooned the sitting president of the United States. And John Cena showed up portraying his antihero character, DC's Peacemaker, to preview the upcoming season of his show alongside "Superman" director James Gunn. 💥 Here are the highlights from this year's convention. | John Cena goofs with his director, James Gunn, during the "Peacemaker" Season 2 panel at Comic-Con.
