Another retailer is facing a boycott over its actions around diversity, equity and inclusion. Elon Musk had some choice words for Trump's tax bill. And order up − it's time for a burger! |
👋 How's it going? Rebecca Morin here. It's pouring rain and news here in Washington, D.C.! |
But first: Don't miss this sunset. 🌅 If you're in New York City, a rare sunset spectacle known as "Manhattanhenge" will take place this week. | Next on the boycott list? Dollar General. Jamal-Harrison Bryant, a Georgia pastor who helped lead a boycott against Target earlier this year, said his group will pressure Dollar General over what he says is the company's retreat from diversity, equity and inclusion practices. The electronic protest includes flooding the discount retailer's email account and phone lines, and a social media campaign. But one thing that's different about this protest: Shoppers aren't being asked to stop buying from the store. Bryant said that's because many people in rural communities are "at the hands of Dollar General" and don't have other places to shop. 🛍️ What to know about the protest. | Dollar General is the latest retailer to face a boycott after backing off its DEI practices. Musk speaks out against Trump tax bill | He was once President Donald Trump's right-hand man. But now, billionaire Elon Musk has expressed disappointment with Trump's sweeping tax and policy bill passed by the House that would increase the budget deficit. Musk, who is scaling back his work with the Trump administration, said the bill "undermines" the work the Department of Government Efficiency has done to cut the federal workforce and spending. The legislation, which Trump has dubbed as the "big, beautiful bill," would extend Trump's 2017 tax cuts, boost defense and border security spending, and launch new requirements for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program. 👉 What Musk said about the megabill. |
Trump responds: The president defended his megabill and the high price tag, suggesting it was the price to get it passed with Republicans' slim majority in the House. Republican leaders there could afford to lose only two GOP votes and still pass the bill. Deeper cuts would have likely lost the votes of key moderates. 👉 Trump said negotiations on the bill continue. | President Donald Trump found himself defending his "big, beautiful" tax and spending bill from criticism from an unexpected source: Elon Musk.
