Israel-Hamas ceasefire hitch

After several world leaders, including President Joe Biden and President-elect Donald Trump, announced a ceasefire and hostage agreement between Israel and Hamas on Wednesday, there has been a delay for Israel's Cabinet to officially approve the truce.

What's happening? Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has accused Hamas of trying to "extort last-minute concessions," without giving further details on what those concessions are. Israel's Cabinet has delayed a vote on the truce. The three-stage agreement, which includes a ceasefire and the release of 33 hostages held by Hamas in exchange for Palestinian prisoners held by Israel, was expected to begin Sunday. U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken said Thursday that he was confident the deal would hold. 👉More on the hiccup.

All aboard the confirmation train

Several more of President-elect Donald Trump's Cabinet picks faced probing questions Thursday on policies like fossil fuel drilling and federal disaster aid during their confirmation hearings before the Senate.

Let the questions begin: Climate change was a main topic in the hearings for Lee Zeldin, the EPA administrator-designate; and former North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum, Trump's choice for interior secretary. 👉 Follow today's coverage.

Wind warning for LA fires

Will the wildfires be rekindled? As firefighters work around the clock to contain the deadly blazes that have destroyed homes and upended lives in the Los Angeles area, authorities warned of strong winds returning as well as other environmental catastrophes.

Weather update: Fierce winds are expected to return to the LA area next week, and fire authorities are concerned it could reignite the flames. Los Angeles Fire Department Chief Kristin Crowley urged residents to clear all brush within 200 feet of their homes. Another concern? Mudslides. Rain is coming to the area, but it also brings the risk of "massive debris flows." 👉Follow today's coverage.
