SpaceX launches a mission to bring NASA astronauts home. Tariffs on certain goods expand worldwide. And would you still fly Southwest after the airline's policy changes for checked baggage? |
👋 Howdy! Rebecca Morin here. Look what I brought for you today. It's Wednesday's news! |
Astronauts one step closer to home | Houston, get ready for takeoff … back to Earth. The SpaceX mission known as Crew-10 is launching into orbit Wednesday evening from Florida on its way to bring two astronauts stuck in space for nine months back home. NASA astronauts Suni Williams and Butch Wilmore, who have been at the International Space Station since June, flew to the orbital outpost for the doomed maiden crewed voyage of the Boeing Starliner spacecraft. 🚀 How to watch the mission launch. | Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams on the ISS. Layoffs are first step to shut down Education Department | President Donald Trump's administration is cutting the Education Department in half, laying off more than 1,300 employees after about 500 took buyouts. Trump is considering an executive order to dismantle the agency and is urging all federal departments to prepare for "large-scale reductions in force" by Thursday. Education Secretary Linda McMahon said the move is part of a plan to shut down the department altogether. 👉 Why the Education Department layoffs matter. | President Donald Trump in the Oval Office at the White House on Wednesday. The trade war has gone worldwide. President Donald Trump on Wednesday implemented a global 25% tariff on steel and aluminum imports. The move was met with immediate backlash from the European Union and Canada, both of which imposed their own tariffs. |
What goods are affected? Trump's tariffs on imported steel and aluminum affect a wide range of goods, including automotive and tractor parts, metal furniture, construction materials and machinery parts, according to Reuters. 👉 Follow today's updates. | A worker inspects a steel coil on the factory floor before at ArcelorMittal Dofasco steel mill in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada on Wednesday. Well, some frequent Southwest Airlines travelers will have to start to. The airline is overhauling many of its unique features, including changes to its bag and seating policies. Though some frequent flyers told USA TODAY they plan to wait and see how the changes affect them, others are considering returning to competing airlines. |
What changed? Southwest announced that the two-free-bag policy will be exclusive to Southwest Rapid Rewards A-List Preferred Members and Business Select fare passengers starting May 28. Last year, the airline revealed it will switch to assigned seating in 2026. ✈️ What Southwest loyalists think about the changes. |
