As the dust begins to settle after Election Day, President Joe Biden addressed the nation. The battle to control a key branch of the U.S. government continues. And Cuba was left in the dark after Hurricane Rafael raked across the country.

👋 Hey y'all. Laura Davis here. Ready for Thursday's news? It's ready for you.

But first: Some monkey business. 🐒 Dozens of monkeys are on the loose in South Carolina after escaping from a research facility.

Biden promises smooth transition

Pledging his administration's full support for a smooth transition of power, President Joe Biden spoke to the nation from the White House Rose Garden, telling supporters that "a defeat does not mean we are defeated."

From the speech: "In a democracy, the will of the people always prevails," Biden said, two days after his vice president, Kamala Harris, lost the election to Trump. Trump famously refused to accept his loss to Biden four years ago. The president also lauded Harris, saying his "partner and public servant" ran an inspiring campaign after he dropped out this summer. 👉 More from Biden's speech.

Who will win the House?

All eyes were on vote counts in pivotal U.S. House races Thursday as both parties hoped to seize control of the lower chamber, a last chance for Democrats to check Republican power next year. It will take 218 seats to rule the House, and although neither party had reached the threshold early Thursday, the numbers appeared to favor Republicans. 👉 Here's what to expect with a GOP trifecta.

A move to boost the economy

In hopes of further slimming down costs for millions of Americans, the Federal Reserve lowered its key interest rate by a quarter-percentage point Thursday, its second straight rate cut amid easing inflation. But don't be surprised if the cuts slow from here on out, economic forecasters say.

Why it matters: The Fed lifts rates to tamp down borrowing activity and inflation. It lowers rates to spark a softening job market and economy. And Trump's tax, trade and immigration policies are expected to partly reignite inflation, which has slowed substantially since 2022. 📊 What it means for your wallet.

How Trump's victory could affect the US economy.

Hurricane Rafael slams Cuba

Still packing winds of 100 mph, Hurricane Rafael remained at Category 2 strength after barreling across Cuba, pummeling the country with flooding rain and knocking out its vulnerable electrical grid. The storm pushed into the open water of the Gulf of Mexico on Thursday, the National Hurricane Center said. Over the next several days, Rafael was expected to steer well away from coaster areas, weakening and possibly dissipating before reaching the western Gulf Coast. 🌀 See the storm's track here.
