Why people are panic-buying toilet paper again. The death toll from Helene rises as residents muddle through recovery. And how Oct. 7 and the Israel-Hamas war reshaped lives in the United States. |
👋Hey, Thursday! Laura Davis here. Just a heads up: I'm taking next week off, so no news from me! But have no fear: My good friend Julius Lasin will be bringing you all the biggest stories of the day – just like clockwork. Now, let's get to the news, shall we? |

If you're hearing the news about the union dockworkers strike and feeling the urge to run out and stock up on toilet paper, stomp the brakes! |
Rolls for everyone: When 45,000 union workers left their jobs Tuesday after negotiations for a new contract broke down, it effectively shut down 36 East and Gulf Coast ports. These ports handl about half of all U.S. imports, and the shutdown may trigger flashbacks to the COVID-19 pandemic. But consumers may be stocking up on the wrong things – and panic-buying when they don't need to. | At Brown's ShopRite in Bensalem, Pennsylvania, there was still plenty of toilet paper available on Tuesday, though shelves were starting to empty. Heartbreak across 6 states | A week after Hurricane Helene began a devastating march across the Southeast, the death toll surpassed 200 on Thursday, and the need for power and water grew more urgent for hundreds of thousands of people in its path. Helene is now the fourth-deadliest hurricane to hit the U.S. mainland since 1950 and the deadliest since Katrina in 2005. Conditions are dire in and around Asheville, North Carolina, where Helene drenched the already sodden area with more than a foot of rain, destroying scores of homes and roads. 👉 See our live coverage. | Damage from Hurricane Helene as seen from a National Guard helicopter near Green Mountain, N.C., on Wednesday. How a year of war has changed us | It's been almost a year since Hamas forces attacked southern Israel, killing 1,200 people and kidnapping 250 more. Since Oct. 7, the assault reignited decades-old hostilities and sparked an Israeli military response that has claimed the lives of more than 40,000 Palestinians in Gaza. The situation has taken a toll in the U.S. as well, with lives upended or transformed by the war's fallout: People have lost family members and seen relatives' homes bombed from afar. Friendships, family and professional relationships have been damaged or severed, all because of who they are or their beliefs about the overseas conflict. 👉 A look at lives reshaped by war. |
