E. Jean Carroll testifies; Trump attacks

Carroll detailed her rape allegations against Trump in civil court on Wednesday, while the ex-president and 2024 Republican presidential candidate attacked the lawsuit as politically motivated. "I'm here because Donald Trump raped me," Carroll said during the first day of testimony in her defamation lawsuit against the ex-president. On his Truth Social website, Trump – who is not attending the trial – said her story is "fraudulent & false." Follow our full coverage.

Zelenskyy, China's Xi talk on phone

In a "long and meaningful" conversation, Chinese President Xi Jinping and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy spoke on the phone Wednesday, and Xi pressed his position as a neutral peacemaker in the Russian-Ukrainian war that has dragged into a second year. House Republicans push toward debt ceiling vote

Despite a veto threat from the White House, House Speaker Kevin McCarthy rushed ahead Wednesday toward a vote on his sweeping debt ceiling package, shoring up support after making post-midnight concessions to Republican holdouts in the slim GOP majority. The GOP plan — which includes $4.5 trillion in spending cuts — is expected to pass the House and get nowhere in the Democratic-led Senate, but McCarthy hopes it leads to another sit-down at the White House and breaks the negotiating stall with Biden.
