OnPolitics Today: Conyers won't take go for an answer
Rep. John Conyers speaks to a reporter at the end of

Calls for Rep. John Conyers to step down increased on Thursday after a former staffer accused him of "violating my body, propositioning me" over years before firing her in 2014. The woman, Marion Brown, broke a confidentiality agreement to appear on the Today  show before House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi called on the longest-serving member of Congress to step down.

Don't hold your breath, Conyers' lawyer said.

"First of all, it's not up to Nancy Pelosi," Arnold Reed told reporters outside of Conyers' Detroit home. "That decision will be completely up to the congressman."

Conyers remained hospitalized, Reed said, for what he assumed to be a stress-related condition.

Franken sees a new accuser - and an investigation

An investigation launched Thursday into sexual misconduct claims made against another lawmaker, Sen. Al Franken, as a fifth accuser stepped forward. Ohio Army veteran Stephanie Kemplin, 41, said the Minnesota Democrat groped her breast as they posed  for a photo in 2003, per CNN. Franken, who has apologized and called his actions unintentional, said he welcomes the investigation.

GOP tax bill, poised to pass, would add $1 trillion to national debt

The tax bill getting pushed by Republicans in the Senate would tack another $1 trillion onto America's debt over the next decade, a nonpartisan congressional analysis found. The bill's fate remains unclear after a "trigger" plan meant to appease deficit hawks collapsed on Thursday. Congress is also rushing to avoid another government shutdown as next week's funding deadline nears. A short-term resolution would keep the lights on, if lawmakers can agree on how short it should be.

Theresa May, Betsy Devos ding Trump for actions on Muslims and Native Americans

British Prime Minister Theresa May rebuked President Trump on Thursday for spreading unverified, anti-Muslim videos from a widely-condemned fringe group in Britain. May said she wasn't afraid to say when "the United States have got it wrong." Her comments came after Trump tried to criticize May in a tweet - but he initially tagged the wrong user.

Meanwhile, Trump's education secretary, Betsy DeVos, offered a soft criticism of his calling Sen. Elizabeth Warren "Pocahontas" (Native American leaders have called it a racial slur) while meeting with Navajo war heroes this week. "We can all do well to reflect on the things we say before we say them,"  she said.

Why do high-profile men expose themselves? It's all about power

The Short List

Why powerful men expose themselves

The allegations are eerily similar. A powerful man exposes himself or undresses in front of a female coworker or acquaintance. The high-profile names so far include Harvey Weinstein, Louis C.K., Charlie Rose and most recently Matt Lauer. While Lauer and NBC haven't explained the sexual harassment allegations that lead to his dismissal this week, "Variety"  reported the allegations include Lauer dropping his pants in front of a female employee. NBC News' Stephanie Gosk said as many as eight accusers have stepped forward. Since the block-buster news broke, many cringe-worthy videos of Lauer are resurfacing. But why do powerful men expose themselves?  It's often about power, clinical psychologist Steve Graubard said. They are "acting out a fantasy that's based on needs for attention" and "control," he said. As the list grows of Hollywood players and others accused of sexual harassment, many are asking, whether the situation will change?

401(k) investors rejoice: Dow closes above 24,000 for first time

Finally some good news. The Dow surged 332 points Thursday and passed another milestone by topping 24,000 — adding to this year's sizable gains for stock investors.  It was the Dow's best day of the year and biggest one-day point gain since November 2016. How does this affect me? If you had a 401(k) with $100,000 invested in the Dow at the start of 2017, that's now worth an estimated $123,000. And some stocks are better than others. Why is the stock market doing so well? The 2017 rally was fueled by a global economic recovery that has been a boon for corporate profits and lifted consumer confidence to its highest levels since 2000. We'll take it.

Nancy Pelosi calls on Rep. John Conyers to resign as more allegations surface

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi said Thursday its time for Rep. John Conyers, D-Mich., to  resign amid increasing sexual misconduct allegations. Pelosi fell short of criticizing Conyers, but said "the brave women who came forward are owed justice." Conyers, who is longest serving member of Congress, was hospitalized this week, though its unclear why. On Thursday, a former staff member appeared on "Today" and accused him of "violating my body"  among a number of sexual misconduct claims. Pelosi isn't the only one calling on Conyers to step down; House Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wis., also called for Conyer's resignation Thursday. Will he go? Conyers' lawyer, Arnold Reed, said the decision is "completely up to the congressman."

To do list: Clean out desk. Turn in parking pass. Deactivate Trump's Twitter account

The ex-Twitter employee who deactivated President Trump's Twitter account has revealed himself, saying he shut down the commander in chief's feed on his last day of work. Bahtiyar Duysak of Germany described his legendary exit to TechCrunch. He worked in the Twitter office tasked with fielding terms of service violations. So, when someone reported Trump's account for abusive language, he deactivated it then left the building. He claims he did nothing wrong: "I didn't do anything that I was not authorized to do." Trump's account was down for 11 minutes on Nov. 2, sending the Internet into a tizzy.

News Alert: Senate tax bill adds $1 trillion to deficits

Republicans have made a very big deal pitching their tax reform plan as an elixir for economic growth.

But a new nonpartisan analysis of the Senate tax bill suggests that while it will spur some additional economic growth, it won't be nearly enough to compensate for the full cost of the bill's provisions, which include tax cuts for businesses and individuals.

The Joint Committee on Taxation, the Congressional scorekeeper for tax bills, estimates that the Senate tax bill could generate enough growth to create nearly $408 billion in new revenue over a decade. But even with that additional revenue, the bill would still add an estimated $1 trillion to deficits.
