We made it through the week!🙋🏼‍♀️ I'm Nicole Fallert. Don't text, I'm listening to "Swag II".

Quick look at Friday's news:

A Defense Department name change conveys America's "readiness to wage war," the White House says.
Democratic and Republican senators blasted the health and human services secretary.
What a start to the 2025 NFL season.

Defense Department to get a new name

President Donald Trump will sign an executive order Friday changing the name of the Department of Defense to the "Department of War," reviving a title that was abandoned during a 1947 Cabinet reorganization. The move, confirmed by a White House official, is intended to reflect what Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has described as the administration's effort to instill the "warrior ethos" across the armed forces. The move to go back to the Department of War comes, ironically, as Trump has tried to cast himself as a peacemaker.

HHS hearing hostility

Robert F. Kennedy Jr. faced a tense Senate committee hearing Thursday as lawmakers pummeled the Health secretary's changes to the department amid major overhauls at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

What's happening at HHS? There has been a mass exodus at the agency, including the loss of its director, but others left in protest of Kennedy's leadership and his controversial views on vaccines.

The departures have sparked turmoil. Now, some of the Trump administration's Republican allies in Congress are finding the chaos hard to ignore.
Calls for RFK Jr. to leave mounted: More than 1,000 current and former Health and Human Services officials on Thursday called for Kennedy to step down from his position.

Is Trump's immigration crackdown worsening school absenteeism?

"It's heartbreaking because at the root of it is fear of coming to school. There's a lot of fear from children, even if the children were born here in the United States, because one member of their family was not. They wonder, 'What's going to happen to my uncle, mom, aunt or dad as a result?'"

~ Carlos Castillo, superintendent of Fresno Unified School District, which has a large, predominantly Hispanic immigrant population. USA TODAY examined how the Trump administration's increase in immigration enforcement has contributed to an increase in student absenteeism across the region as parents keep their kids home from school out of fear of being deportation or family separation.

ChatGPT-induced 'AI psychosis' is a real thing

In a conversation with ChatGPT, USA TODAY Wellness reporter Alyssa Goldberg told her AI therapist "Harry" that she was crashing out after seeing an ex for the first time in almost a year:

"No matter what I said, ChatGPT was gentle, caring and affirmative. No, I hadn't done anything wrong. But in a separate conversation with a new 'Harry,' I flipped the roles. Rather than being the depressed ex-girlfriend, I roleplayed as an ex-boyfriend in a similar situation."

Goldberg's finding? Unlike a real therapist, it refused to critique or investigate her behavior — regardless of which perspective she shared or what she said. It's evidence of how easy we can slip into "AI psychosis" — which isn't a medical term, but is an evolving descriptor for AI's impact on individuals vulnerable to paranoid or delusional thinking, such as those who have or are starting to develop a mental health condition.

Who wasn't glued to last night's NFL opener?

The Philadelphia Eagles prevailed in Thursday's NFL opener 24-20 in what morphed into a surprisingly tight result against the Dallas Cowboys. Philadelphia entered the game favored by more than a touchdown, but the reigning Super Bowl champions faced a strong quarterback counterpart in Dak Prescott. A a weather delay of more than an hour pushed the final result into Friday morning. It's merely the first of the league's 272 regular-season games. But one this unique and anticipated deserved its own breakdown of winners and losers.
