The Powerball jackpot keeps climbing. Robert F. Kennedy Jr. was grilled on Capitol Hill as turmoil swirls at the CDC. And the fashion world is mourning a legend.

👋 Hello! Rebecca Morin here. It's a rainy day here in Washington, DC. But it's not stopping me from bringing you Thursday's news!

But first: Marsquiake! 👨‍🚀 Seismic activity on Mars show the Red Planet's "lumpy" interior is likely the remnants of ancient space rocks colliding into the planet.

No winner … yet

My chance isn't over just yet! The Powerball jackpot soared to an estimated $1.7 billion Thursday, setting up another round of frenzied ticket sales ahead of the next drawing Saturday. There was no jackpot winner when numbers were drawn Wednesday. The prize is now the third-largest in U.S. history and the biggest since $1.586 billion was up for grabs in January 2016. 💰 What to know about the next Powerball drawing.

How many Powerball tickets sold? There were 162,032,212 tickets sold for Wednesday's drawing, a 189% increase in sales compared with the Aug. 27 drawing for an $850 million jackpot, according to the Multi-State Lottery Association. The chances of winning remain astronomically low − 1 in 292.2 million. 🤑 See the winning numbers for Wednesday's drawing.

RFK Jr. faces fiery questioning on Capitol Hill

Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. defended his record as he faced tough questions from Democrat senators and some Republicans over changes to the department amid major overhauls at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Kennedy, a longtime vaccine skeptic who opponents say has promoted misinformation about public health, appeared before the Senate Finance Committee in a fiery hearing as the administration promote its "Make America Healthy Again" commission, which promises an action plan to combat chronic diseases in children. 👉 See highlights from the committee's hearing.

CDC exodus: RFK Jr., with President Donald Trump's backing, recently ousted his handpicked CDC director, Dr. Susan Monarez. The move prompted several other top officials to quit the agency in protest of Kennedy's leadership and his controversial views on vaccines. 👉 Five takeaways from Kennedy's hearing.

DC sues to halt national guard

The city government in the nation's capital is fighting back − legally. The District of Columbia sued the Trump administration over the deployment of National Guard troops. City officials say President Donald Trump has "run roughshod" over the principle that the military should not be involved in law enforcement and asked a federal judge to block the president's deployment of 2,200 troops, arguing it is unconstitutional and violates federal law.

Why it matters: The case could help redefine how National Guard troops are deployed to help fight crime and quell disturbances. Trump has also threatened to send troops to Chicago and New Orleans.  👉 How Trump was able to deploy troops in DC.

Saying goodbye to a fashion icon

His elegant designs, his legacy and, of course, his name are cemented in fashion history. Giorgio Armani, the Italian fashion designer who achieved timelessness through simplicity, has died at 91. Armani "worked until his final days," the Armani Group said in a statement Thursday announcing his death. The designer had been ill for some time and had to drop out of his group's shows at Milan's Men's Fashion Week in June, the first time in his career that he had missed one of his catwalk events. 👉 What to know about Armani's career.
