Brian and Katy Wuoti feel burdened for the thousands of children in their state of Vermont who do not have families or a place to call home. Driven by their faith, they became licensed to foster children.
The state’s foster care system is in crisis. There are more kids in need of a home than families available, meaning some children are kept in temporary placements like emergency rooms.
Desperate pleas are going out from the Department for Children and Families—begging for families to open their hearts and homes to these children. “We need you! Family Services is in a crisis beyond what we have seen before,” read one email.
The Wuotis served as foster parents for years, even adopting two children out of the system. They were eager to continue fostering children and sharing the love of Christ with them. State officials should have been just as eager to place more children with this family that cared so deeply for those in need.
Would it surprise you to learn that the state did just the opposite?
In fact, the state eventually REVOKED the Wuotis license—because of the very Christian faith that motivated them to foster in the first place.
The state said they had to agree with its views on gender ideology—views which directly contradict their Christian beliefs—if they wanted to keep their license. That meant committing to taking kids to pride parades or using incorrect pronouns for them.
They said they could not. So, the state turned these loving parents away.
Unfortunately, this blatant discrimination is happening to more people than just the Wuotis.
Bryan and Becca Gantt also saw their foster license revoked for the same reason. A similar story is also unfolding in Washington State for Shane and Jennifer DeGross.
For every foster and adoptive parent whom the state discriminates against, there is a child who will go another night without a safe home and loving family.
At Alliance Defending Freedom we’re standing by these parents—for the protection of their freedom of speech and religion, and the good of the children they hope to serve.
But thanks be to God, we’re seeing momentum. A court recently sided with Jessica Bates, a Christian mom in Oregon who was forbidden from adopting kids because of her faith. Now, she’s free to begin her adoption journey.
But as you just read, we must stand with parents in other states where this fight is still ongoing.
Will you raise your voice to support the Wuotis’ fight for their rights? It is such an encouragement to know that there are friends like YOU on their side.
By signing this statement, you’re telling government officials that this religious discrimination is NOT okay, and that you stand with the Wuotis and others like them who seek to help kids in need. |
