Trump's cruelty is a distraction from his failures

Alligator Alcatraz is cruel for a reason: To appease the MAGA base and keep them from realizing Trump isn't making good on any of his promises. ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌  ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌

Today's Opinions

Mon Jul 21 2025

Alligator Alcatraz is cruel for a reason: To appease the MAGA base and keep them from realizing Trump isn't making good on any of his promises.

Amber Brown writes Breonna Taylor's name in chalk on the bricks at Jefferson Square Park Wednesday, May 28, 2025 in downtown Louisville, Kentucky. It was five years ago in 2020 when Louisville protestors called for justice for Taylor, who was shot and killed by LMPD in her apartment during a botched raid earlier in the year. "It's mixed feelings about the losses and the community," said Brown, who was among the first people to protest five years ago. "Thinking about the beautiful people I met, how many times I wrote her name. There's never going to be enough change."

Breonna Taylor deserves justice. A 1-day sentence isn't it.

The 1-day sentence sought by Trump's Department of Justice for former Louisville police officer Brett Hankison is an injustice to Breonna Taylor.

Trump is doing what other conservative presidents only talked about

We were told that Donald Trump was bad news for the Republican Party. But those of us on the right have to be impressed with his conservative wins.

A Jan. 6, 2021, riot at the U.S. Capitol sought to overturn the defeat at the polls months earlier of then-President Donald Trump.

Don't look now, but Trump is full-on weaponizing the FBI

Some J6ers pardoned by Trump have since been arrested, as the FBI agents and federal prosecutors who worked on those Jan. 6 cases have been demonized.

Do you believe a Jeffrey Epstein "client list" exists? Do you think the Trump administration has access to it and, if so, should they release it? USA TODAY readers react in this installment of the Opinion Forum.

I don't care about an Epstein list. Trump's right: We should move on.

Is there a Jeffrey Epstein 'client list'? And does the Trump administration have access to it? USA TODAY readers share their opinions.

President Donald Trump signs an executive order on March 20 attempting to disempower the federal Education Department.

Goodbye, Education Department. I'm so glad to see you go.

President Donald Trump's job isn't to employ as many bureaucrats as possible. It's to deliver effective and efficient services to taxpayers.

Protestors participate in a "study-in" in front of the U.S. Department of Education on March 21, 2025 in Washington, DC. President Donald Trump signed an executive order yesterday directing Education Secretary Linda McMahon to begin the process of dismantling the Department of Education.

Trump is right: Federal government doesn't belong in education

The U.S. Department of Education should be shuttered, and essential functions should be woven into other existing government departments.

A protester holds a sign calling for the release of files regarding late sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, as part of the 'Good Trouble Lives On' national day of action against the administration of US President Donald Trump in Houston, Texas, on July 17, 2025.

Trump, engulfed in Epstein scandal, turns on his greatest ally

The unfolding Jeffrey Epstein scandal has Donald Trump threatening to sue Rupert Murdoch, the father of Fox News.

A man gestures to a photograph of US President Donald Trump and convicted child sex offender Jeffrey Epstein after it is unofficially installed in a bus shelter on July 17, 2025 in London, England. The satirical artist behind the stunt has previously targeted Elon Musk and Tesla.

Trump fanned flames of Epstein conspiracy. Then he got burned.

Making promises you can't keep to a crowd as volatile as conspiracy theorists is ill-advised, and Trump is feeling the effects of that now.

Portrait of young people just voted out of the poll place.

American teens deserve to vote, just like 16-year-olds in the UK

American democracy is in a fragile state. It would help to give younger people a chance to participate in the electoral process.
