The Manhattan shooter left a three-page note. Trade deals are coming in, and they could hurt your wallet. And if you see these bugs, be sure to squish them!

Manhattan in mourning

Flags at half-staff. A three-page note. And an investigation underway. Four people were killed Monday after a gunman armed with an AR-style rifle opened fire at a midtown Manhattan skyscraper. NYPD officer Didarul Islam, security officer Aland Etienne and investment firm director Wesley LePatner were among those killed. Shane Tamura, 27, the suspect, killed himself after the shooting.

NFL offices were the intended target: Mayor Eric Adams said preliminary investigations show the gunman may have intended to target the NFL offices but took the wrong elevator. Tamura left behind a three-page note claiming he had chronic traumatic encephalopathy from playing football, police said. CTE is a brain condition found in people who have sustained repeated blows to the head, often through contact sports such as football. ๐Ÿ‘‰ Follow the latest updates on the shooting.

The EU trade deal and your wallet

President Donald Trump's deadline for countries to make a deal before hefty tariffs are imposed is Friday – and one major U.S. trading partner came to the table. The United States is imposing a 15% tariff on most imports from the European Union, half of the proposed rate Trump threatened earlier this month. A baseline tariff of 10% is now in place for products from most countries, but about two dozen nations received letters from Trump warning that higher rates are on the way.

Get ready for higher prices: Trump's tariffs, including the new rate for European Union imports, would raise prices by 1.8% in the short run, the equivalent of an average household income loss of roughly $2,400. Imported cars, pharmaceuticals, furniture and designer handbags and apparel could see price increases. ๐Ÿ‘‰ See a breakdown of the products that could cost more.

Gaza's growing death toll

It's a grim figure: 60,000 Palestinians have been killed in the Israel-Hamas war. The death toll was announced by Gaza health authorities, whose figures are often cited by the United Nations and have been described as reliable by the World Health Organization. The Integrated Food Security Phase Classification on Tuesday also issued an alert that a starvation crisis in Gaza could soon be formally classified as a famine. World leaders and humanitarian organizations have been warning of a worsening hunger emergency in Gaza. ๐Ÿ‘‰ Only half of aid is getting approved, one aid group said.

Squish it!

Every morning when I see the pretty spotted wings of a lanternfly, I can't help but marvel at it. And then I stomp on it. No, I'm not being heartless; I'm just following the federal government's recommendations. Spotted lanternflies pose a serious threat to crops and trees in the United States, and the Department of Agriculture is urging Americans who come across the bugs to smash them.

What crops can be threatened? States with hardwood trees, roses, hops, grapevines and stone fruits like peaches, plums and cherries should be concerned with the bugs. And crops like apples, almonds and hops could be threatened, too. ๐Ÿ‘‰ See which states have lanternflies.
