Hello! Rebecca Morin here. Hope everyone had a great holiday weekend! I know I did, especially after Mexico won in last night's Concacaf Gold Cup final!

The pause on Trump's trade war is coming to an end

President Donald Trump said he's imposing a 25% tariff on goods from Japan and South Korea beginning on August 1 – a move that comes as he continues his pressure campaign on longtime U.S. allies who have not yet entered into new trade agreements with his administration. Trump is expected to send other letters to smaller U.S. trading partners. As many as 100 could go out in total before Wednesday, when the president's pause on higher tariff rates is due to expire. The administration previously said the new rates would take effect on August 1, if countries did not come to another arrangement with the United States before that time. What Trump's tariff announcement means.

Musk moves on from the GOP

One day after President Donald Trump signed his signature legislation into law, Billionaire Elon Musk announced the formation of the "America Party." Then, Trump accused his former ally of going "completely 'off the rails.'" Trump said Musk, who once served as a special advisor and was often a guest at the White House, has become "a TRAIN WRECK over the past five weeks." Musk criticized Trump's legislative package of tax reductions and Medicaid cuts ahead of its passage. The nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office projects the legislation will increase the national debt by $3.4 trillion, which Musk lambasted. Why Trump and Musk are feuding.

Fears of extreme weather rise

Most Americans fear extreme weather is getting worse, a new USA TODAY/Ipsos Poll found. The concerns come as flash floods in central Texas have left at least 81 dead, including at least 27 children and counselors from an all-girls summer camp. A third of those surveyed nationwide last month said they sometimes or often worry that they themselves will be a victim of a disaster like a hurricane, tornado or flood. A 58% majority predicted that extreme weather events will become more frequent in the near future, though views differed along partisan lines; 84% of Democrats feeling that way compared to 38% of Republicans.
