Much of the U.S. is going to be sweating this week. President Trump faces continued backlash over the Jeffrey Epstein case. And a star of the classic family sitcom "The Cosby Show" died at age 54. |
π Hello! Rebecca Morin here. Did the weekend fly for you too? Oh well, here's Monday's news that you don't want to miss! |
But first: A whopping $601,193. π That's the average household income in the wealthiest suburb in the United States: Scarsdale, New York. Check out the 10 wealthiest suburbs in America. |
Bring on the heat (or not!) | It's getting toasty out there, and I don't mean 80-degrees type heat. It's hitting triple digits as a "heat dome" cooks large swaths of the country this week. Parts of Texas, Arkansas and Louisiana will have highs peak at near or above 100 degrees, and the heat index in a much larger area of the South, Midwest and Great Lakes will also surpass 100 degrees, according to Jonathan Erdman, a senior meteorologist at weather.com. The heat wave may last until at least the last weekend of July in the Plains and South, while slowly expanding west toward the Rockies. π₯΅ See the forecast for your area. | A worker with the Times Square Alliance wears a towel over his head as he works during an extreme heat warning in New York City, U.S. on June 24. Epstein's ghost haunts Trump | President Donald Trump hit his six-month mark in office with his signature legislation of tax reductions and Medicaid cuts as law and support from the Supreme Court to slash the federal workforce. But he can't escape backlash on his administration's handling of the Jeffrey Epstein case, as some Democrats, Republicans and members of the president's MAGA base call for more transparency and documents regarding the convicted sex offender to be released. A majority of Americans, 69%, said they thought the federal government was hiding details about Epstein's clients. π How Epstein is overshadowing Trump's presidency. |
Grand jury testimony: Manhattan federal Judge Paul Engelmayer, who faced calls of impeachment by Republicans earlier this year, has been assigned to handle the Justice Department's request to release the grand jury testimony that led to charges against Epstein associate Ghislaine Maxwell. Trump last week directed Attorney General Pam Bondi to release the investigation's grand jury testimony, a step that can only be ordered by a judge. π What the grand jury testimony would show. | A protester holds a sign outside the White House demanding the release of all files related to Jeffrey Epstein on July 18. How Linkin Park is moving past controversy | In the end, the backlash doesn't even matter – or at least Linkin Park is moving forward despite it. The Grammy-winning alt-rock group is heading back to the United States next week as part of a world tour for their latest album "From Zero," and is taking past controversy head on. Co-lead singer Emily Armstrong was brought on after a hiatus following the death of lead singer Chester Bennington in 2017. Fans were critical of Armstrong's alleged ties to the Church of Scientology and convicted "That '70s Show" actor Danny Masterson. In an interview published Friday, Armstrong said she was "naive" about the backlash she received. Bandmate Mike Shinoda said fans were critical because "she wasn't a guy." πΆ Why the band is refraining from playing some songs on tour. | Mike Shinoda and Emily Armstrong of Linkin Park perform at Open'er Festival in Gdynia, Poland on July 6. Remembering actor Malcolm-Jamal Warner | Actor Malcolm-Jamal Warner, best known for his role as Theodore Huxtable on "The Cosby Show," has died at 54. The Emmy-nominated actor drowned off the coast of Costa Rica on Sunday, ABC News and The Associated Press reported. Costa Rican National Police confirmed to ABC News that Warner died after being caught by a high current in the water while swimming near Cocles, a beach in Limon, Costa Rica. In addition to starring as the son of Bill Cosby's Cliff Huxtable and Phylicia Rashad's Clair Huxtable, Warner was also known for his role as Malcolm McGee in the 1990s UPN sitcom "Malcolm & Eddie" and as Dr. AJ Austin on the Fox medical drama "The Resident" from 2018 to 2023. π More on Warner's career. | Malcolm-Jamal Warner speaks onstage during the Grammy Awards Premiere Ceremony in Los Angeles in 2023.
