Sean "Diddy" Combs' trial has ended with a split verdict. The House remains locked in debate over President Donald Trump's sweeping tax bill. And people living in the United States aren't feeling very happy… |
👋 Happy Wednesday! Rebecca Morin here. How's it already midweek? But don't worry, it's not a "mid" day for news! |
Diddy's split verdicts are in |
Sean "Diddy" Combs was acquitted of racketeering and both sex trafficking charges but convicted on two counts of transportation to engage in prostitution – ending a nearly two-month federal trial that became one of the most high-profile cases of the #MeToo era. A 12-person jury delivered the bombshell split decision Wednesday. 👉 Here's what happened during the trial. |
Why was Diddy convicted? His conviction centers on the transportation of two former girlfriends, Casandra "Cassie" Ventura Fine and an anonymous woman referred to as "Jane," as well as sex workers, for the purpose of prostitution. |
Will he go to prison? Diddy faces a maximum of 20 years in prison; each count carries a maximum of 10 years. Combs has been held at Brooklyn's Metropolitan Detention Center since his arrest Sept. 16. 👉 What to know about Diddy's charges. | Sean "Diddy" Combs reacts after verdicts are read of the five counts against him, during Combs' sex trafficking trial in New York City, July 2, 2025 in this courtroom sketch. Jane Rosenberg, Reuters | Will they whip the votes? The House of Representatives began debating President Donald Trump's sweeping tax and policy package Wednesday, one day after the Senate passed its own version of the bill. But House Republicans, who narrowly passed the legislation in May, are struggling to find the votes needed to pass the Senate version. House Speaker Mike Johnson and other GOP lawmakers met with Trump and other officials at the White House on Wednesday to help chart a path to pass the president's bill, which includes tax reductions and Medicaid cuts. 👉 Why some GOP lawmakers are a 'no.' | Speaker of the House Mike Johnson (R-LA) walks to his office at the U.S. Capitol on July 02, 2025. A guilty plea in the Idaho stabbing case | As part of a plea deal to avoid the death penalty, Bryan Kohberger, the man accused of stabbing four Idaho college students to death in 2022, pleaded guilty Wednesday to the quadruple murder. Kohberger entered his guilty plea on all counts in the killings of Madison Mogen, 21, Kaylee Goncalves, 21, Xana Kernodle, 20, and Ethan Chapin, 20, agreeing to four consecutive life sentences and waiving his right to appeal. Judge Steven Hippler chose not to reject the plea agreement. Victims' families have been divided over the deal – some say it spares them from reliving the painful case, and others say their day in court was taken away. 👉 What the families said about the deal. | Bryan Kohberger, charged in the murders of four University of Idaho students, appears at the Ada County Courthouse, in Boise, Idaho on July 2, 2025. Finland holds the top spot for the eighth consecutive year. When the report was first introduced in 2012, the United States was no. 11 globally. So what's behind the decline? The study found that "the rise in political polarization" was among the reasons the U.S. and several European nations fell in the rankings. 😁 See which countries are happiest. |
