Trump sent in National Guard to respond to LA protests against his immigration policies | Demonstrators in Los Angeles protesting against President Donald Trump's immigration policies clashed with police and the National Guard on Sunday. Trump ordered hundreds of National Guard to the city for the protests. Democratic California Gov. Gavin Newsom in overnight social media posts urged Trump to "stop fanning the flames" after the third day of protests. Newsom said the state will sue Trump for deploying the National Guard. Amid the mounting legal clash between the federal government and the state of California, Trump suggested that his border czar Tom Homan should arrest Newsom. "I would do it … I think it's great," Trump said when asked if Homan should arrest the governor. What Trump said about Newsom. |
• | What happened? A small protest started after Immigration and Customs Enforcement conducted raids at several businesses in the downtown Los Angeles area on Friday. By Friday evening, more than 100 people gathered at the city's immigration services building and detention center. Police declared the protest an unlawful assembly and ordered the crowd to disperse; shortly thereafter, at least 50 police officers in riot gear arrived. Large protests erupted in the city of Paramount in Los Angeles County, about 15 miles south of downtown Los Angeles, on Saturday in anticipation of more ICE raids. That led to Trump signing a presidential memorandum ordering at least 2,000 National Guard troops to Los Angeles. On Sunday, tensions escalated after the National Guard arrived in parts of Los Angeles. Protesters continued to gather as the day wore on, and demonstrations eventually grew violent. | • | Can Trump invoke Insurrection Act? Trump on Sunday called the demonstrators in Los Angeles "violent, insurrectionist mobs" and ordered his cabinet officers "to take all such action necessary" to stop what he called riots. When asked by reporters if he was going to invoke the Insurrection Act, Trump said "It depends on whether or not there's an insurrection." He said he does not think there is currently an insurrection. The Insurrection Act is an 1807 law that empowers a president to deploy the U.S. military to suppress events like civil disorder. | • | Resistance to immigration crackdown: It's not just Los Angeles where there are protest against Trump's immigration crackdown. Trump and Musk's public breakup continues | President Donald Trump and billionaire Elon Musk's very public and messy feud isn't over. Trump over the weekend said that Musk, his former adviser, would face "very serious consequences" if he financed candidates to challenge Republicans who support the president's legislative package for tax cuts and border security. Trump during an interview with NBC News did not share what the consequences would be. Musk last week criticized Trump's so-called "big, beautiful bill" that would enact the president's domestic policy agenda, calling it a "disgusting abomination" and urged lawmakers to kill it. During the 2024 elections, Musk contributed nearly $300 million to help Republicans, including Trump, win. What to know about Trump and Musk's feud. |
