President Donald Trump threatens Iran's leader amid the country's escalating conflict with Israel. R. Kelly's lawyers allege prison staff led to his overdose. And the jury for one trial is still weighing a verdict. |
👋 Hi! Rebecca Morin here. Would ya look at that? It's Tuesday's news! |
Trump threatens Iran's supreme leader | President Donald Trump threatened Iran's supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, on Tuesday while pushing Tehran to end its retaliatory airstrikes on Israeli civilians. The president also warned Iran against any threats to U.S. servicemembers in the region. In a post on Truth Social, Trump claimed the U.S. knows where Khamenei is hiding but said the Iranian leader is safe "for now." USA TODAY on Monday reported that Trump had warned Israel off a plan to kill Khamenei, who holds ultimate sway over Iran. Trump's statement came as new explosions were heard in the Iranian capital and Vice President JD Vance suggested the U.S. military could get involved if Iran's clerical leadership refuses to give up its nuclear enrichment program. 👉 Follow the latest updates from the escalating conflict. |
U.S. warplanes sent to Middle East: The Pentagon has shifted warplanes and an aircraft carrier to the Middle East amid the conflict. U.S. officials told USA TODAY the moves have been defensive in nature as the Pentagon observes rather than participates in Israel's punishing air campaign. 👉 The move is to protect troops stationed in the Middle East. | Israeli firefighters extinguish burning buses after a hit from an Iranian missile barrage on Tuesday. GOP senator deletes controversial posts | First came the backlash. Then came the deleting. Republican Sen. Mike Lee of Utah deleted his controversial social media posts on the assassination of Minnesota Democratic state Rep. Melissa Hortman after facing backlash from across the aisle. The posts, which came after Hortman and her husband were shot in their home Saturday, baselessly tied the attack to the political left. Minnesota Democratic Sen. Tina Smith, a friend of Hortman's, confronted Lee about the posts at the Capitol and called for an apology. Vance Boelter, the suspect in the attack, has been described as a devout Christian who has attended President Donald Trump's campaign rallies, according to The Associated Press. 👉 What Lee's social media posts said. | Sen. R. Kelly lawyers allege prison murder plot | Lawyers for R. Kelly say the singer overdosed last week on medication given to him by prison staff – claiming it's part of a plot to have the "Ignition" singer killed. Kelly's legal team, in a filing Tuesday obtained by USA TODAY, said prison staff provided him with an "overdose quantity" of medication on June 12 after he was placed in solitary confinement. That led to his hospitalization on June 13, the filing said. Kelly, 58, has been serving a 30-year sentence since 2022 for racketeering and sex trafficking. He is serving his sentence in the Federal Correctional Institute facility in Butner, North Carolina. Beau Brindley, Kelly's lawyer, claimed in a statement Tuesday that Bureau of Prisons officers want the singer dead "before the crimes committed against him in his cases are exposed." 👉 Federal prosecutors have called the claims "fanciful." | R. No verdict yet in Karen Read trial | It has been two days of deliberations. The 12-person jury in the second murder trial of Karen Read, a Massachusetts woman accused of killing her police officer boyfriend, have not yet reached a verdict after deliberating for more than 15 hours as of Tuesday. Deliberations started Monday in the eight-week-long murder retrial. The jury asked four questions related to evidence and charges before resuming deliberations in the high-profile case. Read, 45, has pleaded not guilty to three charges: second-degree murder, vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated and leaving the scene of a collision resulting in death. 👉 The latest updates from the trial. | Karen Read and her lawyers Robert Alessi and David Yannetti leave court at the end of the day on Monday.
